In a recent video, I went through the economics of batteries versus solar power. Batteries do not pay for themselves before the warranty is up at the moment – they’re not an economically rational purchase in Australia.
  
But what if you want the other benefits of batteries – and one of the big benefits is backup. In my latest video (+ transcript), I outline the different types of home solar battery backup and what happens with each in a mains grid blackout scenario.
 
In other battery related news, a standard covering new battery installations in Australia was published by Standards Australia last week and three lithium-ion battery boffins have bagged a Nobel.
 
Over to hydrogen produced with renewables now - there continues to be a lot of buzz about it, but SQ's Ronald says spending $4.9 million of taxpayer cash on a project that isn't innovative, requires no new technology, will lose money and harm the environment is stupid.
