“13% alcohol. Lovely focused sweet blackcurrant fruit nose with freshness and a subtle sappy, gravelly edge. Very pure and alluring but not in the slightest bit over-ripe. Pure, clean, refined palate with blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Real focus and harmony. A brilliant expression of Pauillac that’s not trying too hard, and has lovely freshness and the sort of structure that makes you think this could be a good bet for mid- to long-term cellaring. I really like the freshness here.”

“Bordeaux is on my mind at the moment. So I dug this beauty out and shared it. It’s too young, for sure, but what a wine! I was so impressed. This is why we come to Bordeaux: no trace of over-ripeness here, but great concentration and harmony. This is sensational. It’s concentrated and intense with ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit supported by beautifully refined chalky tannins. Structured and bold with restraint: while this has enough ripeness, it is also really direct and savoury with lovely precision to the black fruits. There’s amazing balance and concentration here. Still very youthful with taut structure, and real potential for development. Such purity to the fruit, and no rough edges; structured and fine. An astonishingly good expression of this vintage, which I’ve grown to like quite a bit.”

“Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. ‘Oh baby baby’ as Salt ‘n Pepa declared back in the day: Pichon Baron is a real star of this vintage. It is a little introverted at first, tightly-wound dark berries, tar and graphite and a touch of autumnal leaves. The palate has a chewy entry, good acidity, firm grip with a dense persuasive finish that is First Growth standard . . . . it is beautifully focused and tensile. This is one of the finest Left Bank wines.”

Château Pichon Baron 1996
“The 1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition . . . certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin – a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this Pichon Baron is going to continue to improve although I would not burn anyone at the stake for opening it now. If you cannot afford the First Growth then this (and Pichon Lalande) would be where I would come.”

Château Pichon Baron 1990
“The 1990 Pichon-Longueville Baron has always been one of my benchmark wines, one that never ceases to perform. Now at 27 years of age, it is clearly at its peak, and what a wondrous thing it is. Now showing some bricking on the rim, the bouquet is utterly sublime, with red berries, cedar, touches of graphite, crushed rose petals and incense. You just want to become enveloped by these aromas. The palate is perfectly balanced, perhaps not as structured as it once showed since the tannins have mellowed, but what you get is a Pauillac relishing its secondary phase, which is almost Burgundy-like in terms of mouthfeel. Suffused with tension, it gains weight in the mouth toward the slightly tart finish. It is a Pichon Baron that only knows how to give sophisticated drinking pleasure. I once wrote that Pichon Baron is better than many 1990 First Growth, and that is a statement I have no reason to change.

Château Suduiraut 1975
"A consistent note compared to the one earlier this year. It has a mature bouquet with mandarin, tangerine, orange rind, lanolin and dried honey that lacks sweetness but is very well defined. The palate is beautifully balanced and fresh with quince and orange rind, a touch of honeycomb towards the long finish that seems dry when compared to the more extravagant 2001. Certainly, this is the best Suduiraut of the decade."
