Whitcraft Winery 2016's:
A Santa Barbara County Classicist

If you want pure, classically styled Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from California then look no further than Whitcraft. Through removing many of the superfluous manipulative techniques used in modern winemaking, Drake Whitcraft achieves great purity in the Santa Barbara county region. Mentored by two pioneers in classically styled California Pinot Noir (his father Chris and Burt Williams of Williams-Selyem), Drake has been able to use the knowledge he gained from these legends and create his own finesse-driven, vibrant and classical style. They represent a truly burgundian style in a region that can achieve it, but rarely does.

Whitcraft’s wines are produced in a very simple, natural and careful style of winemaking, no destemmer, no crusher, low SO2, foot-treading, no racking off of the lees, and inoculating with only one strain of yeast(the Williams-Selyem strain, native to Martinelli’s Jackass Hill vineyard), all in effort to achieve a more pure expression of the terroir and the varietal. His wines rarely surpass 13.5 percent alcohol with vibrant acidity, crunchy fruit and pure minerality. Additionally, he bottles by gravity and hand bottles/corks.

Many of his most respected Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays come from the Pence Ranch vineyard, which is nestled between the rolling hills on the north side of Highway 246 in the Santa Rita Hills. The growers are using organic farming practices as well as many Biodynamic techniques. Today, we are pleased to offer 4 wines from this special property, 3 Pinot Noirs and 1 Chardonnay. We also are offering another Chardonnay from the beautiful Presqu’ile estate, and a Syrah from the Los Olivos district. Get these while you can, quantities are limited and these will sell out fast.

"Second-generation vintner Drake Whitcraft is diligently honing a delicate, fresh style of Pinot Noir, which shows expertly in this bottling. Aromas of crushed violet, under-ripe cherry, tarragon and spearmint decorate the nose. The palate combines raspberry with crushed mint, proving extremely soft and feminine. It would be easy to drink the whole bottle." 94 Points Wine Enthusiast

"Mulberry, forest floor, moss, thyme, incense and rainbow peppercorns show on the dynamic nose of this bottling by second-generation vintner Drake Whitcraft. Rounded boysenberry fruit meets with herbal freshness on the palate, which is slightly richer than many of his bottlings but still very much in the lighter house style. The tannins are sturdy." 93 Points Wine Enthusiast

"Another great example of Drake Whitcraft managing to shoot low on ripeness and yet deliver a wide array of flavors, this clonal selection is very light in the glass and shows aromas of piquant raspberry, sagebrush and candied red fruit. The palate is zesty yet full, with more raspberry and lifting tarragon flavors, proving rather refreshing." 94 Points Wine Enthusiast

"Fresh Asian pear, lemon blossoms and honeysuckle make for an enjoyable nose on this bottling from a very coastally influenced vineyard just east of Santa Maria. The acidity on the palate is super racy and vibrant, carrying flavors of chalk and lime pith that sizzle long and deep." 94 Points Wine Enthusiast

"Very chalky on the nose in a Chablis-like style, this bottling, which is made in a warehouse just blocks from the beach in Santa Barbara, shows aromas of lemon blossom and Gravenstein apple. It's extremely tightly wound on the sip, with a savory salt character as well as lemon balm flavors. It's texturally intriguing and compelling." 93 Points Wine Enthusiast

"Lilacs and plump blackberry fruit meet with dried sage, fennel and a hint of green peppercorn on the lively fresh nose of this bottling by second generation vintner Drake Whitcraft. The palate is peppery, fresh and light, with cracked black pepper, rounded purple fruits and a strong acidity proving easy to quaff." 92 Points Wine Enthusiast
