Napa Valley is considered to be one of the world’s premier wine regions, yet it did not always hold this prestige. After the first vitis vinifera were planted in the mid 19th century by John Patchett and others, Napa did not have an easy road to success. With the phylloxera outbreak in the late 1800s and the passing of the 18th amendment and Prohibition, wine-making was all but a lost art in California. Fortunately, a wave of passionate and talented winemakers (and business people) resurrect the dying wine industry. Napa Valley was finally thrust onto the world stage after claiming victory in the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976, creating the legend that still grows today.
