"One the world's most fabled Domaines  which is actually a 3.8-hectare monopole AOC  Château Grillet was purchased by François Pinault, one of the world's richest men, in 2011. Until then, the estate had been owned by the Neyret-Gachet family of Lyon since 1830 .... The 2012s will be the first bottlings made from vine to bottle under the watch of Frédéric Engerer, who also oversees the winemaking at Pinault's other wine properties Château Latour in Bordeaux and Domaine d'Eugénie (formerly Domaine René Engel) in Burgundy."
Josh Raynolds, Vinous
"I was fortunate to have only one visit on the day I arrived in France — and to have it be at this legendary property. Purchased by the Pinault family in 2011 and managed by Frédéric Engerer (who also looks after the family's other viticultural interests — Château Latour, Clos de Tart, Domaine d'Eugénie, Eisele Vineyard), the quality here is on the upswing. Korean winemaker Jaeok Chu Cramette arrived at the property in March of this year, having moved down from Domaine d'Eugénie [formerly Domaine René Engel] in the Côte de Nuits. She previously worked for an importer in South Korea but came to France in 2008 to pursue a winemaking degree and stayed in Burgundy afterward. Despite being a recent arrival, she was conversant with all vineyard plots, saying of the property's four hectares, 'I feel like I'm doing gardening, not viticulture.' This minuscule estate recently added an adjacent parcel of Condrieu, so going forward there will be three wines released each year."

CHÂTEAU-GRILLET 2019
"A real burst of fresh apricot and peach, lemon verbena and green tea. This has the salt and power of Château-Grillet, the confit lemon peel on the finish, the salted nuts. Very full-bodied indeed, very rounded and long, but not massive, more spherical."

CHÂTEAU GRILLET
CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE 2020
"A powerful and fleshy wine for this humble appellation with stacks of fresh citrus character (zest, pith and juice). The fine tannins deftly support the ample body and, together with the stony minerality make it feel crisper at the long finish than it really is. Declassified wine from the terraces of the Chateau Grillet site. Very limited production. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

James Suckling
"The vineyards of Condrieu and Château-Grillet were planted by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus in the 3rd century CE from plants brought from Dalmatia. Numerous mosaics preserved at the archaeological site in Saint-Roman-en-Gal (around 12km away) confirm its origins, and one of them shows a harvest scene including grape crushing. The early development of the vineyards in this region is probably linked to the Pax Romana. This allowed the ancient Gallic tribe known as the Allobroges, whose territory included part of the right bank of the Rhône facing Vienne, to acquire Roman citizenship and therefore have the right to plant vines."
Château Grillet

"Located in a tiny amphitheater of steep, granite slopes just beside the Rhône River in the heart of the Condrieu appellation, Château Grillet is both an estate and its own AOC — one that consists of a single estate and was created in 1936 .... It was purchased by French businessman François Pinault (whose company also owns Château Latour) in 2011. They’ve invested heavily in the property, cleaning up the cellar, replanted vineyards, and implementing a second wine called the Côtes-du-Rhône Pontcin — all with the focus on pushing quality to the highest level .... This estate is well on its way to making some of the finest Viognier-based wines in the world."
