| "Marsannay is an appellation that has so much to offer - stylistically reminiscent of Bonnes-Mares albeit without quite the complexity - yet with a similar fruit profile, exuberance, and showiness. With growers such as Sylvain Pataille and Philippe Roty - not forgetting Bruno Clair - surely it is a matter of time before it is bestowed a few premier crus?
Anyway, if you have not acquainted yourself with the wines of Sylvain Pataille, and you have a mobile phone - use it and stock up." Neal Martin, Wine Advocate |
| | “I have made this observation before but there is perhaps no one in the Côte de Nuits, with the possible exception of Cyril Audoin, that does more with less in terms of producing top quality wines from less prestigious appellations. If you aren't familiar with the Pataille wines, then I strongly suggest that you make their acquaintance - your pocketbook will thank you.” Allen Meadows, Burghound.com |
| | | “‘We started the harvest on 6 September with the Marsannay Blanc on limestone soils,’ Pataille explained. ‘The picking was carried out over almost three weeks and the average yields were 32hl/ha.’ We discussed the need for his reds to undergo a second winter in barrel. ‘I think they need two winters,’ he opined. ‘The wines change completely on the first warm days of the second spring. You feel them change in just two days. You smell that they don’t want food anymore and that is the time to bottle.’
He then spoke about the 2019 vintage. ‘I didn’t understand anything in 2019,’ he admitted, only half-joking. ‘It was warm and dry, but the wines are so fresh, more so than the 2018s. When you try 2018s, they are generous and concentrated but 2019 is so well balanced.’” Neal Martin, Vinous.com |
| | | "Chardonnay. Above the church on limestone and marl."
|
| ‣ "From a prime 0.17ha, east-facing parcel at the foot of the slope in Marsannay proper, this Chardonnay is fermented in cask (one-third new), on its the lees and aged for two years without bâtonnage. The resulting wine displays a lovely, exotic nose, showing aromas of tropical fruit, citrus and spice. The texture is dense, without being heavy, and the finish is surprisingly long." 93 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter Magazine |
| ‣ "The 2019 Marsannay Charme Aux Prêtres, from vines adjacent to Pataille's parcel of Aligoté, was sampled directly from barrel. That influenced its creamy texture and seductive lemon curd, pâtisserie, and vanilla notes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite intense and powerful with gorgeous honeyed tones mixed with lemongrass on the finish. This is going to be marvelous." 91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous.com |
