| "Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries - not only of Napa Valley and of California, but of the world.
It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of the Stags Leap District of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity.
Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfectly as can be. They have kept their feet, heads, and egos grounded, and they continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage ...
|
| | | For starters, their Chardonnay has always been a non-malolactic Chardonnay, of which 75% is barrel-fermented and the other quarter in stainless steel. As good as it is, it’s hard to believe they produce 6,400 cases of it. John and Doug Shafer, along with Elias Fernandez, have certainly excelled at turning out gorgeous Merlots that are concentrated and fleshy as well as elegant. A big success for Shafer has been their Stags Leap One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon. They make between 6,000-7,000 cases of this wine in any vintage. About one-third of their famous Hillside Vineyard, which represents 100% of their flagship wine Hillside Select, goes into this cuvée .... Lastly, another sensational wine from the Shafer portfolio is the Relentless. This has been a terrific 'Rhône ranger' offering since it was first released in 1999, and it continues to be primarily a Syrah blend and the rest Petite Sirah. Like the Hillside Select, it’s aged 32 months in new oak prior to being bottled." Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate |
| | "There is so much to like in these new releases from Shafer. Sure, the Hillside Select Cabernet gets most of the attention, but the more times passes, the more I am impressed with the other wines. The last few vintages of the Syrah-based Relentless have been terrific, while the One Point Five Cabernet remains one of the best Napa Valley Cabernets in its price range. Shafer's TD-9 is another wine that delivers superb quality for the money." Antonio Galloni, Vinous |

| | 100% Chardonnay; whole-cluster pressed and fermented with wild yeast in barrel (75% oak, 25% stainless steel); 0% malolactic fermentation; from Shafer’s Red Shoulder Ranch estate vineyard in Carneros
|
| ‣ "All elegance and silk, this beautifully balanced wine offers a lively texture, with subtle lemon, toast and kiwi flavors on a full body. The mouthfeel is graceful and mouthwatering, backed by acidity that perfectly meets the generous fruit flavors. Making a wine of this caliber in thousands of cases is quite an accomplishment." 97 Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast |
| ‣ "A vibrant, agile, and poised Chardonnay with aromas of pears, apples, sweet spices, jasmine, and hints of stones. It’s medium- to full-bodied with precise definition on the palate. Fresh acidity and crunchy fruity at the center and a velvety touch to the edge, bringing volume and a voluptuous character throughout. Lively and long finish. Drink or hold." 96 JamesSuckling.com |
| | | | 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec; 20 months in new French oak (Allier and Tronçais in origin); from estate vineyards in Napa Valley's southern foothills south of Stags Leap District
|
| ‣ "This TD-9 Cabernet Sauvignon ... shows an amazing clarity of dark fruit. Its deep black cherries, blackberries and touches of black olive embody classic Cabernet. Beautifully integrated tannins lend a posh texture that's still bracing enough to help the wine age and improve." 95 Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast |
| ‣ "Dried cherries, blackcurrants, chocolate, sweet licorice, anisette and hints of moist earth on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, refined and velvety with a softer, powdery tannin structure. Attractive core of ripe black fruit with a lingering finish. Cabernet sauvignon." 93 JamesSuckling.com |
| | | | 76% Syrah, 24% Petite Sirah; 30 months in new French oak (Allier & Tronçaisin origin); from ridgetop and foothill sites along the Vaca Mountains south of Stags Leap District
|
| ‣ "The 2018 Relentless might be the finest vintage of this I’ve tasted. Based on 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, this beauty boasts a saturated purple hue as well as a full-bodied array of ripe blackberries, peppery herbs, smoked game, and spring flowers. Pure, concentrated, and plush, it nevertheless stays graceful and light on its feet, with a great finish. I love it today, but it’s going to keep for 10-15 years." 97 Jeb Dunnuck |
| ‣ "A young wine with superb depth and polish that shows great depth and brightness. Full and focused with blue fruit and long, fine tannins that are compact and energetic. Slate. Graphite. Sophisticated and curated. So beautiful to try now, but be patient ..." 97 JamesSuckling.com |
| | | | 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, 1% Malbec; 20 months in new French oak (Allier & Tronçais in origin); a cuvée of Shafer’s hillside estate, Borderline Vineyard in Stags Leap District, and selected sites in Napa Valley’s southern foothills.
|
| ‣ "This sophisticated and concentrated wine wraps lovely dark plums, blueberries and cocoa flavors in velvety tannins that are well-integrated and soothing, while still setting the wine up for a potentially long life. Subtle baking spices, espresso and cedar accents enhance the impressive fruit flavors." 96 Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast |
| ‣ "Beautiful black and blue fruit on offer here with notes of violets, sea shell, iodine and graphite. Full-bodied, broad-shouldered and structured with super-fine and dense yet almost weightless tannins that push the depth of the wine, leading to a smooth, caressing finish." 94 JamesSuckling.com |
