Brooding and somber, with quite a bit of complexity, the 2015 certainly has a ton to offer. Wild cherry, tobacco, spice, leather and cedar all build as this powerful, strapping Ghemme slowly opens. DOMAINE D'HENRI CHABLIS 1ER CRU L'HOMME MORT VIEILLES VIGNES 2018 “The 2018 Chablis L’Homme Mort Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru was picked on September 12 and 13, and matured 72% in stainless steel and the remainder in 228- and 600-liter barrels of 2–4 years old. This has a complex and enticing bouquet of yellow stone fruit, apple peel and light stony scents. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture on the opening. DOYARD ŒIL DE PERDRIX EXTRA BRUT 2018 “The 2018 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Millésimé Œil de Perdrix is lovely, wafting from the glass with scents of orange blossom, mirabelle plum, sweet citrus fruit and red berries. FABIO MOTTA BOLGHERI LE GONNARE 2018 “Fabio Motta is one of the best performers in Bolgheri among the small producers of the next generation. Almost ready with his new winery, it represents a kind of garagiste in the appellation. He ferments all the wines with natural yeast and manages careful extraction and maceration. His original blend for Le Gonnare sees an addition of Syrah to complete the 85% of Merlot and is aged in 1/3 new French oak barriques. Intense and perfumed it shows kiwi peel and cedar wood aromas, loaded with restrained cassis and bitter orange flavour. FRANÇOIS CHIDAINE CLOS BAUDOIN 2020 “The 2020 Baudouin comes from Vouvray but was vinified in Montlouis sur Loire, so it is not eligible for the appellation since changes were made on January 1, 2015. The 2020 is a pure style offering a lovely cloud of barrel fermented fruit. This has clarity, a sense of roundness with lightness and also a sense of purpose like an Aussie rules umpire signaling a goal. It has a corridor of attractive tannins, and as it moves across the mouth, it becomes a much more powerful style that will come together with time in bottle. FRANÇOIS CHIDAINE LES BOURNAIS 2020 “The 2020 Les Bournais is a silky, seductive wine that retains a sense of shape despite its ripeness. The appellation of Montlouis has lots of clay-flint, but this is clay-chalk, and the result is a round yet focused style with fine length and line. The barrel fermentation and maturation (just 10% new) doesn't impart any flavor but adds to the roundness and gives support to the wine. GEORGES LAVAL CUMIÈRES LES CHÊNES BRUT NATURE 2018 “The 2018 Georges Laval “les Chênes” Blanc de Blancs is a stunning young wine. It was disgorged in May of 2022 after three years aging sur latte. The beautiful bouquet jumps from the glass in a blaze of passion fruit, pear, fresh almond, a beautiful base of chalky soil tones, brioche, a hint of buttery oak and a pungent topnote of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a fine core, lovely mineral undertow, elegant mousse and a long, focused and impeccably balanced finish. This is a young wine that deserves plenty of time in the cellar to hit its true apogee, but it has no rough edges today and is already damn hard not to want to drink in this first blush of youth! GEORGES LAVAL CUMIÈRES LES HAUTES CHÈVRES BRUT NATURE 2017 "It is hard to believe that Vincent Laval’s bottling from les Hautes Chèvres made the switch from very old vine pinot noir after the 2009 vintage to (not quite so) old vine pinot meunier in 2010 and never missed a beat in terms of quality and aging potential. The 2017 is the eighth harvest of pinot meunier composition for this beautiful cuvée and it is another gorgeous young wine. The bouquet is bright, pure and complex, offering up scents of tangerine, apple, brioche, chalky soil tones, lavender, acacia blossoms and just a hint of oak in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, crisp and deep at the core, with lovely transparency and grip, pinpoint bubbles, precise focus, seamless balance and a very, very long, refined and complex finish. HIEDLER RIESLING RIED HEILIGENSTEIN 2021 “Sourced from 60-year-old vines, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling shows clear, open, bright and elegant fruit with herbal as well as earthy notes of broken rock. Juicy, intense and dense in the mouth, this is a powerful and firmly structured, still somewhat bitter Heiligenstein that needs some time to develop its full size. JÉRÔME PRÉVOST LA CLOSERIE FAC-SIMILE ROSÉ EXTRA BRUT LC18 NV “Disgorged without dosage, the NV Extra Brut Rosé Fac-similie (LC18) bursts with aromas of red berries, plums and spices mingled with freshly baked bread and dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and sapid, with delicate structure and an enveloping core of irresistibly succulent fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish. LAFARGE-VIAL FLEURIE CLOS VERNAY 2016 “The 2016 Fleurie Clos Vernay wafts from the glass with a nuanced bouquet of raspberries, wild plums, dark chocolate and loamy soil. LE POTAZZINE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2017 “The ladies of Le Potazzine make a terrific bottle of Brunello, and their high-elevation vineyards are especially important in maintaining freshness in a scorching-hot vintage such as this. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pretty succession of wild berry, cherry and plum aromas, along with light spice, crushed flowers and perfumed potting soil. This wine is also distinguished by a touch of bay leaf and maybe a warmer note of cured tobacco as well. This is an impressive effort …” 95 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate $84 → Buy Now
MARGÓN LEÓN PARAJE EL SANTO 2014 “The most aromatic red is the 2014 Pricum Paraje de El Santo. The grapes from old vines planted on sandy soils in conjunction with the cooler year delivered a wine with less alcohol and higher acidity, more freshness and a more elegant profile, all within the rusticity of the grape and the zone, of course! It has a floral touch intermixed with spices and an earthy touch. The palate reveals abundant fine-grained tannins. MAS DE DAUMAS GASSAC SAINT-GUILHEM-LE-DÉSERT ROUGE 2018 ”Dark ruby-garnet, with violet highlights and a wide, light rim. “Elegant black forest berry confit, hints of ripe currant and dark cherry, and subtle noble wood spice underlain with candied orange zest and tobacco nuances. Full-bodied and very elegant and round, with fine, rich extract; showing heart cherry notes and ripe, integrated tannins, this is mineral and persistent, and still very fresh and youthful; this will continue to improve with years of aging in the bottle; this wine has class.” 95 Falstaff Magazin $49 → Buy Now
MORGEN LONG CHARDONNAY X OMNI 2020 “I first became aware of the high quality of the densely-planted vineyards owned by Craig Williams when I tasted a wine produced from his X Novo Vineyard during a visit to Walter Scott Wines a few years ago. That is the sister vineyard to his X Omni Vineyard. The vines at X Omni are still on the younger side, but this is going to be one of the best sites for chardonnay on the west coast in coming years and is already producing really beautiful fruit. Seth Long picked his parcel here on September 20th, the day after the smoke cleared out of the Willamette Valley. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged for eleven and a half months in one new five hundred liter puncheon and a “one wine” three hundred and fifty liter cask. The wine was assembled in stainless steel to spend its second winter and then bottled in the February of 2022. It tips the scales at a svelte 12.5 percent alcohol this year. The wine is gently new oaky on the nose, wafting from the glass in a refined blend of apple, almond, lime blossoms, a beautiful base of soil, an exotic touch of fresh mint and a beautiful framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, complex and full, with a superb core of fruit, marvelous soil signature, zesty acids and a very long, complex and intensely flavored finish.” 94 John Gilman, View From The Cellar $89 → Buy Now

NIEPOORT QUINTA DE BAIXO BAIRRADA BRANCO BICAL / MARIA GOMES VINHAS VELHAS 2017 “Light lemon in colour, with its usual vibrant, expressive but austere character, this wine really emphasises its mineral notes from the calcareous soils, harmonising with aromas of fresh herbs, limes and white blossoms. The austere and mineral-driven character of the Bical grape variety is complemented by the expressivity of the Maria Gomes grapes. On the palate, an impressive lightness offers, nevertheless, good body and plenty of grip. Its acidity and saline notes lift this wine, lending it a unique character full of freshness and elegance. The Vinhas Velhas is a linear, direct wine with an austere and profoundly mineral finish. This serious, extraordinary white wine should be enjoyed in a Burgundy glass.” Niepoort $39 → Buy Now
NIEPOORT DOURO BATUTA 2015 “The 2015 Batuta is a field blend from old vines, with lots of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete and others, aged in 20% new French barriques for 20 months. It comes in at just 12.5% alcohol. This may be my favorite Batuta in a long time. Now, this is always an elegantly crafted wine, always understated (often, to a fault). This year, though, it has a particularly nice combination of freshness, grip and ripe tannins that make it very appealing. Then, it adds that gorgeous intensity of fruit flavor that this vintage produced, perfectly supported and defined by the acidity that slams the fruit into the palate. There is also very respectable weight (relative to this usually understated bottling and the elegant vintage). It then finishes tight and grabs the palate. Overall, this deserves some props and plenty of them. It should age beautifully. It is also a vintage that is approachable young, but it will certainly be better in 2020 or so, assuming you can keep your hands off of it. It is very tasty now, if a bit tight. NIKOLAIHOF RIESLING STEINER HUND 2017 “Another stunning Steiner Hund dry riesling from Nikolaihof! Deep and complex nose with a ton of flint, but also crushed-rock, quince and pomelo aromas. For the very warm vintage this is astonishingly cool and restrained, with beautiful wet-stone minerality intertwined with the elegant acidity. Very long, silky finish. TRE MONTI SANGIOVESE DI ROMAGNA SUPERIORE RISERVA THEA 2018 “The 2018 Sangiovese Superiore Riserva Thea really shows the potential of Romagna Sangiovese. This pulls you close to the glass with a dazzling bouquet of black cherries, mixed with licorice, dusty rose, cedar spice box and hints of cocoa. There’s an undeniable elegance to its silky textures, complimented by a polished display of ripe red berries, plums and blood orange, but also a core of brilliant acidity that keeps the expression incredibly fresh. Salty minerals mingle with fine tannins throughout the long and structured finale, where notes of licorice and inner violet florals resonate on and on. TAMERÁN GRAN CANARIA VIJARIEGO 2020 “Vijariego Blanco, also known as Diego, is thought to have been introduced in the Canaries from Andalucía and is not a mutation of Vijariego. There are multiple spellings, most notably Vijariego and Vijiriego, even Bujariego in La Palma, but this name is not allowed anymore. It’s a grape with high acidity and lowish alcohol, so it’s often used for sparkling wines. The 2020 Vijariego Blanco is only 11.2% alcohol with a low pH of 3.14 and notable acidity, 7.5 grams (measured in tartaric acid per liter), so it's a light and sharp wine true to the variety. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-liter oak barrels, where it matured with lees for 10 months. It's floral and vibrant, the latest-ripening grape here, with more freshness. VALDESIL VALDEORRAS PEZAS DA PORTELA GODELLO 2018 “Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh pear, white peach and orange zest on the nose, with honeysuckle and mineral notes adding lift. Bright and sharply focused in the mouth, offering incisive citrus and orchard fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of fennel and quinine. VINCENT CUILLIER L'ARBRE BRUT NATURE 2018 “The 2018 Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs L'Arbre is such a pleasure to taste. Creamy and ample in the glass, the 2018 offers a compelling mix of Meunier richness and brighter, more saline accents that serve as an attractive counterpoint. VIÑEDOS DEL JORCO CASTILLA Y LÉON LAS ENEBRADAS 2017 “I was really looking forward to the 2017 Las Enebradas, because the first vintage, 2016, was the revelation of my last review of the zone of Gredos. I was quite surprised because the profile is very different: the wine has a lot more color and up to 2% more alcohol. Nacho Jiménez, one of the partners, explained that the profile of the 2016 vintage was exceptional and hard to replicate, as yields were higher and it rained just before they picked the grapes, so the wine is a lot lighter. 2017 was very different, a lot warmer and with lower yields, and the grapes delivered a concentrated juice with a lot more color, tannin and alcohol. It has a more Mediterranean profile, more in line with the rest of the wines. This fermented with 50% full clusters and temperature control and matured in one 500-liter oak barrel. Despite the higher ripeness and the headier character, the wines from Navatalgordo have a different texture and fine thread, the finesse of a cooler place and sandy soils at higher altitude (even if the vines are south-facing here), and you see it when tasting this next to the wines from Cebreros.
