Jean-Marc Pillot is the fourth generation of the Pillot family to head the Domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet. After taking over for his father in 1991, Jean-Marc has expanded the amount of vines under cultivation and left his mark on the vinification process. The results are wines “that seem to have it all: great acidity, rich fruit, intense minerality, massive concentration, and surprisingly precise terroir delineation.” With vines ranging from 25-50 years old, Jean-Marc’s chardonnay’s showcase balanced minerality coupled with rich texture and a smooth, long finish.
The 2015 offerings from Jean-Marc Pillot are complex and structured enough to cellar, but rich and fresh enough to drink now. Be sure to secure your selection of these collectible, highly allocated wines.

“Bright yellow. Pepper and salt on the restrained nose. Boasts outstanding depth and energy, but the youthful stone fruit flavors are currently dominated by powerful tactile minerality. Most impressive today for its mounting, sinewy, palate-staining finish--and hard to spit! This brisk, penetrating, dense young white Burgundy delivers a rare combination of power and weightlessness. I would never have guessed it was from 2015. Production here was just 23 hectoliters per hectare, according to Pillot.” Vinous 93-95 Points

“Bright pale yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of yellow peach and white pepper show a slightly candied quality but also very good lift. Plush, peppery and broad; quite dry and mineral-driven but not austere. Very horizontal in the mouth. Finishes classically dry and energetic, with terrific mineral persistence.” Vinous 91-93 Points

“Notes of petrol, citrus, resin and essence of pear precede full-bodied and dense if slightly less refined flavors that possess a palate coating texture that carries over to the impressively complex and highly persistent finish. This is opulent but well-balanced and should drink well both young and with 6 to 8 years of cellar time.” Burghound 90-93 Points

“Highly aromatic nose combines fresh apricot, almond paste and flowers. Dense, fat and thick on entry, then firmly structured on the back end, with pineapple and lichee flavors enlivened by crushed stone and an almost metallic minerality. This very tactile wine will need at least a few years of aging to develop more give. Perhaps a bit hardened today by CO2 but long on potential.” Vinous 91-94 Points

“Citrus and flinty mineral aromas are complicated by a note of breadcrumb. Initially tight on the palate, showing less obvious sweetness than the Morgeot Les Fairendes. In a more dry, linear, classic style, this premier cru finishes with a touch of youthful bitterness and needs some time in bottle. Riper stone fruit notes emerged with aeration.” Vinous 92 Points

“Pale, bright yellow. Explosive aromas of lemon, licorice, lichee and toasted baguette. The palate delivers a captivating combination of sucrosité, roundness and enveloping minerality, without quite the bracing stoniness of a cooler year. This very fine-grained wine boasts terrific palate presence. Finishes suave and very long, with subtle hints of lime, mint and rock.” Vinous 91-93 Points

“Bright pale yellow. Lovely perfumed lift to the delineated aromas of citrus fruits and white flowers. Penetrating, energetic wine with a strong impression of salinity and dusty extract. The crop level here was 45 hectoliters per hectare but this wine, from a 1949 planting, is wonderfully plush and silky without any weightiness, conveying a tactile impression of concentration. Finishes lemon-limey and long.” Vinous 91-93 Points

This is at once more elegant and cooler with its higher-toned nose of red cherry, pomegranate and violet. The refinement hinted at by the nose is confirmed by the palate as the middle weight flavors are definitely more elegant thanks primarily to the finer-grained tannins, all wrapped in a beautifully delineated, mineral-inflected and textured finale that is just as persistent as the Morgeot if perhaps not quite as complex. While qualitatively similar, these two wines possess very different characters.” Burghound

“This is the first wine to display any material wood influence though I stress that it's quite subtle and easily allows the overtly pepper and earth-inflected aromas of dark currant, plum and humus to be appreciated. There is more size, weight and power if a bit less refinement to the medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannic spine is slightly firmer on the delicious and more complex finale. Good stuff.” Burghound
