CVNE Rioja Blanco Monopole 2015 "White made from the Viura [aka Macabeo] grape variety. After a gentle pressing run juice is obtained. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, which facilitates the removal and retention of primary flavors, fruits and flower aromas typical of the variety." www.CVNE.com
CVNE Rioja Blanco Monopole 2014 "Light gold. Lively, focused scents of tangerine and pear, with a subtle hint of fennel in the background. Fleshy and dry on the palate, offering bitter citrus pith and pear skin flavor that tighten up on the back half. Finishes taut and spicy, with good length and a hint of stoniness." Josh Raynolds, Vinous
CVNE Viña Real Rioja Rosado 2015 "Upon arrival at the winery grapes are selected for perfect condition and after a maceration of only six hours we bleed the wine must by gravity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures prior to a cold maceration. The fermentation is carried out at a temperature below 16ºC around 20-25 days to keep intact primary aromas. Aging in cask 5 months." www.CVNE.com
CVNE Cune Rioja Rosado 2015 "We harvested our carefully selected Tempranillo grapes at optimum ripeness to achieve a high level of aromatic extraction and a good concentration. The grapes are kept in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature to prevent the start of fermentation. The juice is removed from the solids after around 24 to 48 hours, once we have determined that the colour is the pink we require. The fermentation is then carried out without the presence of seeds or skins at a controlled temperature of 16º to 18ºC for around 8 days . . .” www.CVNE.com
CVNE Viña Real Rioja Crianza 2012 "The 2012 Viña Real Crianza, from a very dry, early harvest, feels fresher than the 2011. It's a similar blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha Tinta with Mazuelo and Graciano fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 14 months. The wine was about to be bottled and showed really young with both ripe fruit and plenty of spices, hints of leather, fountain pen ink, black licorice and aniseed over a core of very ripe, showy fruit. It has a lush texture . . . with some tannins that should get polished with a little bit of time in bottle . . . . At this price level the quality is outstanding." 90-92 | Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
CVNE Viña Real Rioja Crianza 2010 "No 2011 had been bottled yet, so I tasted the 2010 Crianza from hand-harvested grapes from Rioja Alavesa and produced in the Viña Real winery. As with the Reserva, the Crianza is usually a blend of 90% Tempranillo complemented with small amounts of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. 2010 had textbook climatic conditions to be a great vintage. The destemmed grapes carry out both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats and the wine ages for some 14 months in French and American oak barrels. This 2010 has a nice bright cherry color with a clean and open nose displaying red fruits and a spicy touch, coming through as quite a traditional nose and a polished palate with good acidity as they aim for freshness and drinkability. This Crianza represents superb value for money." 91 | Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
CVNE Viña Real Rioja Reserva 2011 "The grapes, principally grown in the Rioja Alavesa sub-zone are carefully picked by hand when fully ripe, and only the healthiest bunches are selected. On arrival at the winery, the grapes are cooled and macerated, prior to the alcoholic fermentation, which is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The length of time the fermenting juice is kept in contact with the skins is determined by daily tasting and analysis, until the desired levels of colour and structure are reached. The young wine is then transferred to a mix of American and French oak casks to mature, for up to 2 years, before being bottled. Once bottled, it will remain in our cellars to continue its maturation prior to release . . ." www.CVNE.com
CVNE Viña Real Rioja Reserva 2010 "Going one step up in the quality ladder, the Viña Real 2010 Reserva plays with the advantage of being cropped from a quite balanced, fresh vintage, a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 22 months, during which time it was racked every four months. This wine has all the classical aromas of an old time Rioja, cherries, vanilla, some coconut, dill, leather, cured meat, incense, old furniture and cold bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced with great acidity and fine tannins that make it easy to drink. Pop or keep. It has good freshness, and with time in the glass it develops beautiful aromas of orange peel that transmit very good freshness." 93 | Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
CVNE Contino Rioja Riserva 2008 "Jésus de Madrazo only produced his Reserva wine in ’08, with no single varietal bottlings and no Gran Reserva. The wine is really outstanding, as the growing season’s characteristics has resulted in a wine at 13.7 percent (which is pretty low these days for Rioja Alavesa) and there was absolutely no new oak used during the elevage this year. The outstanding and very elegant wine delivers a lovely bouquet of red and black cherries, pepper, a touch of youthful meatiness, lavender and a really superb base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and already very velvety on the attack, with a lovely core, fine focus and grip and a very long, complex and suavely tannic finish. I know my penchant for cooler wines is showing, but this is one of the finest recent vintages of Contino Reserva I have had the pleasure to taste, and do not let the less than stellar reputation of the 2008 vintage dissuade you from buying this great young bottle of Rioja!" 93+ | John Gilman, View From the Cellar
CVNE Real de Asúa Rioja Riserva 2010 "The best of CVNE's impressive lineup of 2010 high-end Riojas is this pure, staunch, ripe stud that's blasting with blackberry, woodspice, leather and cedar aromas. Lush, layered and deep as an ocean trench, this ultraripe, expressive wine pumps out blackberry, cassis and chocolate flavors prior to a lush, mile-long finish. Amazingly pure and delicious . . ." 96 | Wine Enthusiast
CVNE Cune Rioja Gran Reserva 2009 "Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of red fruit liqueur, vanilla, mocha and licorice, with a suggestion of pipe tobacco emerging slowly. Sweet, sappy and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering suave cherry-vanilla, coconut and floral pastille flavors that are sharpened by a spicy element. Closes long and smooth, with an emphatic echo of intense red fruit and velvety tannins adding grip." 93 | Josh Raynolds, Vinous
CVNE Imperial Rioja Reserva 2010 "Lots of plum, chocolate and rose aromas. Licorice and cloves too. Very subtle yet rich. Full-bodied, very fine and balanced. Lovely firm and silky mouthfeel. It still needs some bottle age to soften but is already long and beautiful. Elegant. Drink or hold." 94 | James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
CVNE Contino Rioja Graciano 2011 "Deep violet with a bright rim. Sexy, high-pitched scents of candied red fruits and floral pastilles, with suggestions of spicecake and minerals coming up slowly with aeration. Juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter in the mid-palate and pick up hints of smokiness and allspice on the back half. At once concentrated yet lithe, this Graciano wine finishes with excellent energy and persistence; dusty tannins contribute shape and grip." 93 | Josh Raynolds, Vinous
CVNE Contino Rioja Graciano 2006 "Jésus Madrazo makes this wine from a nine-acre plot, a masal selection his father planted in the 1980s. This wine's deep black currant scent shows off its fruit while the flavor blends that fruit into an earthiness focused on terroir rather than varietal character. It feels powerful, balanced and complete, with the dynamic energy of a great Rioja red. For setas al ajillo or braised tripe." 94 | Wine & Spirits Magazine
