"In the late 1970s, Neal I. Rosenthal set out to learn everything he could about wine. He opened a small wine ship and, shortly thereafter, a wine-importing business. Today he is one of the most successful importers of traditionally made wines crafted at limited-production, family-owned vineyards in France and Italy."
Sparkling

Recaredo Terrers Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2010 - $29.95
“…It's a blend of 52% Xarello, 44% Macabeo and 4% Parellada with some 9% of the wine matured in barrel for a short period of time. This is the only wine where they use Parellada grapes, which have been reduced more and more, because they believe it needs higher altitude than where they were in their vineyards. This is open, aromatic and developed, with balsamic notes, even hints of camphor, yeasts and smoke. The palate is soft and creamy, quite balanced, with integrated acidity. It was disgorged after 61 months in bottle…”

Italy

Brovia Barbera d’Alba Sori del Drago 2015 - $20.69
From the Distributor: “This Barbera is produced from grapes harvested in the “Garblet” vineyard (also known as “Fiasco”) of Castiglione Falletto from a 0.8 hectare plot on a south-southeast facing slope at 250 meters altitude. The major part of the vineyard was planted in 1970 with a portion being replanted in 1993. The “Sori del Drago” is fermented at 28 degrees Celsius for slightly more than a week. The wine is then racked into stainless steel tank and is aged for 15 to 18 months before being bottled (unfiltered).”

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Reserva Vigneto Pipparello 2011 -  $69.95
From the Distributor: "Comprising 60% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, and 15% Sagrantino, the 2011 “Pipparello” underwent a 56-day maceration, followed by a full four years of elevage—the first two in non-temperature controlled steel, the last two in enormous Slavonian oak casks. Similarly large-scaled as the “San Valentino” above, “Pipparello” is more overwhelmingly brooding, and even more intense in its concentration. The glowering, ultra-savory nose is a thick swamp of camphor, black olives, fresh tar, and sandalwood, with pretty high-toned spices lurking in the background. Like “San Valentino,” its palate is arrestingly dense, yet it carries an incredible amount of energy given its overall disposition—a study in opposing forces that contributes welcome tension. This is a rough-and-tumble, wholly uncompromising wine without a polite bone in its body, yet it still manages to be erudite and nuanced—an embodiment of the spirit of the Bea style at its most extreme."

Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Vigneto Pagliaro 2011 - $89.95
From the Distributor: "Bea produces perhaps his most renowned wine from pure Sagrantino grown on the prized hilltop site of “Pagliaro,” situated at 1300 feet above sea level in Montefalco proper. As one might expect given the power of the 2011 vintage, this wine approximates a cosmic event—neutron-star-dense, with a brooding interweaving of elements that seem to have its own gravity field yet bristles with explosive energy. On the nose, one feels the presence of the whole plant and the earth in which it grows: savory, complex fruits both fresh and dried, all laced with a balsamic undertone; black licorice and warm spice cake; and stem-influenced, wispy, almost herbal notes which counterbalance the wine’s bottomless depth. Somehow, amidst all of this, a sense of restraint emerges—shocking to behold in a wine that exceeds 15% alcohol, but Bea’s wines are always rife with happy contradictions. This is a bold, riotous, flashy vintage of “Pagliaro” that will surely stun all those who cross its path."

Loire Valley

Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roy 2015 - $26.95
From the Distributor: "Sourced from several parcels that are planted in rocky, white soils with an east-southeast exposure (including the “Clos du Roy”), this cuvé is the most full-bodied and masculine of the three core Sancerres of the domaine. Vinified in stainless steel with a late racking to insure that the wine captures the essence of the terroir, the wine is bottled in September of the year following harvest."

Burgundy

J-M Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 2015 - $68.99
“Bright pale yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of yellow peach and white pepper show a slightly candied quality but also very good lift. Plush, peppery and broad; quite dry and mineral-driven but not austere. Very horizontal in the mouth. Finishes classically dry and energetic, with terrific mineral persistence.”

Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Les Perrieres 2014 - $84.95
“An elegant, pure and ultra-refined nose features notes of acacia blossom, pear, wet stone and anise hints that are also present on the impressively rich and voluminous flavors that possess outstanding intensity on the balanced, focused and linear finish. A classic Perrières that is perhaps just a bit less austere than usual.”
91-93 - Burghound

J-M Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot - Les Fairendes 2014 - $64.95
“This is the first wine to display any material wood influence though I stress that it's quite subtle and easily allows the overtly pepper and earth-inflected aromas of dark currant, plum and humus to be appreciated. There is more size, weight and power if a bit less refinement to the medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannic spine is slightly firmer on the delicious and more complex finale. Good stuff.”

Bordeaux

Chateau Belregard Figeac-Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2015 - $29.95
From the Distributor: "The composition of this most prestigious of the wines of this cellar is generally on the order of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is marked by a vibrant ruby/garnet color married to a richly spicy nose with hints of tobacco and coffee in the background; the flavors are dominated by red currant, cassis, and raspberry; the texture is silky and the wine is smooth and generous on the palate; the subtle tannins have grip but are graceful making this wine particularly welcoming over the near term."

Château Clos St. André Pomerol 2015 -  $74.95
“The 2015 Clos Saint-André (which some readers might recognize from the chapter in my Pomerol book) is a minuscule Pomerol grower close to Montviel. It has a generous bouquet of crushed strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, not complex, but clean and pure, and not overwhelmed by the 100% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, a fine thread of acidity, tightly knit red and black fruit with a touch of spice towards the uncomplicated finish.”

Rhône & Provence

Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf du Pape “Cuvée Felix - Selection J-P Versino” 2012 - $80.96
“This decidedly old-school version pumps out a rugged core of black currant, blackberry and bitter plum fruit flavors, infused with brick dust, chestnut and bay leaf notes. The long finish has the tang of a great saucisson sec, thus begging for that perfect pairing. A wine with a track record of aging very, very well."

Domaine Lionnet Cornas “Terre Brulée” 2015 - $59.95
“A terrific wine, the 2015 Cornas Terre Brulee combines smoky notes of grilled plums and meat in a full-bodied format. It's richly tannic and velvety at the same time, with a finish that's simultaneously drying (from tannins) and mouthwatering (from juicy fruit). Farmed organically, vinified with stems in concrete and aged in used, large-format oak, Cornas doesn't get more authentic (or better) than this!”

Château Pradeaux 2007 Bandol “Cuvée 10 Ans d’ Élevage” 2007 - $74.95

From the Distributor: "Anyone who appreciates the feral, visceral nature of Pradeaux will revel in the “X”—a wine that, despite spending ten years in foudre, still feels youthful and vigorous, just beginning its doubtlessly near-immortal life. The aforementioned wild nose is both eager and brooding, a maelstrom of violets, unlit cigar, dried figs, and plums, all framed by an intense iron element. Super-concentrated on the palate (as befitting the quality of the vintage), its chewy tannins are just beginning to show mercy, and one can sense a secondary savory streak beginning to shine through the thick wall of fruit and spice."
