| | | | | Please join us Thursday, July 26 for a spectacular Beaujolais tasting event! |
| | | The 2015 and 2016 vintages mark a modern-day quality benchmark for France’s Beaujolais region. The high tide and green grass scenario engendered by these two spectacular harvests encompassed every one of the region’s 10 renowned cru villages and included virtually every producer worth his or her salt. Josh Raynolds of Vinous Magazine describes the 2015 Beaujolais vintage as “monumental if somewhat atypical” and has bestowed an enormous amount of praise on 2016 as well describing it as “built along more classical lines.”
Both the 2015 and 2016 vintages will appeal to connoisseurs of high quality wine who appreciate the stunning richness and depth of flavor complexity provided by these back-to-back, already legendary harvests.
With Burgundy prices, especially from the Côte d’Ôr, climbing steadily higher, many wine collectors and imbibers are turning to Cru Beaujolais as an affordable alternative to many of the stratospherically-priced productions emanating from the region’s neighbors to the north.

| Domaine Vissoux/Pierre Chermette Beaujolais Origine Vieille Vignes 2016 - $15.95
“Vivid magenta. Sharply focused and pure on the nose, displaying fresh raspberry and cherry scents, along with a suave floral overtone. Vibrant, mineral-tinged red berry and Asian spice flavors show impressive clarity and floral lift. Smooth, sappy and seamless on the penetrating, gently tannic finish, which hangs on with outstanding mineral- and spice-driven persistence.” Vinous 92 Points
Guy Breton Beaujolais Villages Cuvee Marylou 2016 - $19.95
“Brilliant ruby. Vibrant, highly perfumed red fruit and floral scents show excellent clarity and pick up a hint of smoky minerals with air. Juicy, focused and light on its feet, offering subtly sweet raspberry and candied rose flavors sharpened by a jot of white pepper. Finishes racy and taut, with no obvious tannins and strong tenacity.” Vinous 91 Points
Georges Descombes Regnie 2015 - $19.95 “Vivid ruby-red. Fresh, mineral-laced red and blue fruits on the lively, sharply focused nose. Smooth and seamless in texture, displaying ripe raspberry and boysenberry flavors that deepen and stretch out slowly with aeration. Shows appealingly juicy character on the finish, which hangs on with very good tenacity and gentle florality.” Vinous 91 Points Domaine de la Chapelle des Bois Fleurie “Vieilles Vignes de la Cadole” 2015 - $18.95 “This cuvée of Fleurie is sourced from a single parcel planted to vines eighty years old. In contrast to the other wines of the domaine, this special selection is aged 12 months in large, older foudres to best express its formidable character. Surprisingly, this structured wine is supremely elegant and fine; and, it is surely capable of providing pleasure over an extended period of time. Approximately 150 cases per year are available for distribution in the USA.” [From the importer’s web site.]
Domaine Vissoux/Pierre Chermette Fleurie “Garants” 2016 - $24.95 “Vivid ruby. Aromas of fresh dark berries, candied violet and smoky minerals pick up a hint of allspice with air. Sweet and nicely concentrated, offering juicy boysenberry and blackberry flavors and a touch of licorice. Finishes sappy and smooth, showing excellent persistence, lingering spiciness and dusty tannins that sneak in slowly.” Vinous 92 Points

| | | | Domaine Vissoux/Pierre Chermette Fleurie “Poncie” 2016 -$24.95 “Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red/blue fruits, exotic spices and floral pastilles, and a zesty mineral nuance builds in the glass. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated, spice-inflected black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that caress the palate. The floral note comes back strong on an impressively long, energetic finish that's given shape by silky, even tannins.” Vinous 93 Points
Domaine Cheveau St. Amour “Villa Violette 1685” 2015 - $16.95 “This new cuvée is an assemblage of five parcels (average 60 years old) that Domaine Cheveau recently acquired (2015) from their uncle. Like the “Champs Grillés”, the grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before being de-stemmed. After a cold maceration of three to four days and a two-week cuvaison, the wine spends 8 months in stainless steel before bottling. The “Villa Violette” is comparable to the “Champs Grillés” with deep color and structure, explosive fresh fruit, and firm tannins; yet it does present a bit fresher and more youthful on the palate. Approximately 125 cases per annum are available for the US market.” [From the importer’s web site.]
Domaine Cheveau St. Amour “Champs Grillés” 2015 - $18.95 “The “Champs Grillés” lieu-dit is situated in the heart of the Saint Amour appellation on soil composed of sand and schist. The average age of the vines are 70 years (as of 2011) with some as old as 90 years. The grapes are hand-harvested, subject to multiple “tries” (both in the field and on a sorting table); then, the grapes are destemmed, a brief cold maceration is done to extract color and aroma, followed by a 12-day cuvaison with regular pigeage and remontage. The wine is aged in stainless steel and bottled within a year of the harvest. Approximately 250 cases per annum are available for the US market.” [From the importer’s web site.] Damien Coquelet Chiroubles 2015 - $19.95 “Vivid ruby. Pungent red and blue fruit and floral scents are lifted by a zesty mineral note and a hint of white pepper. Palate-staining black raspberry and boysenberry flavors show excellent clarity and a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes sappy, sweet and very long, with subtle earth and floral pastille notes lingering.” Vinous 92 Points
Daniel Bouland Chiroubles “Chatenay” 2016 - $24.95 “Vivid ruby. Sexy, high-pitched red berry and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of Asian spices and succulent herbs. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy raspberry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors that are given spine and lift by a zesty mineral flourish. In a seamless, expressive style, finishing sappy, sweet and very long, with just a hint of silky tannins and an emphatic floral note.” Vinous 92 Points

| | | | Daniel Bouland Côte de Brouilly “Cuvée Melanie” 2016 - $24.95 “Lurid violet. A suave, mineral-accented bouquet evokes fresh red/blue fruits and potpourri, and a spicy element adds urgency. Bright, focused and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated yet lithe raspberry and boysenberry flavors that deepen with aeration. Distinctly graceful in style, finishing gently tannic and impressively long and leaving a sexy lavender pastille note behind.” Vinous 93 Points Jean-Paul Brun/Terres Dorees Moulin-a-Vent 2015 - $19.95 “Very floral and pretty with a sweet strawberry and cherry undertone. Full to medium body, dense and chewy tannins and a medium, fruity finish.” James Suckling 92 Points
Domaine Vissoux/Pierre Chermette Moulin-a-Vent “Trois Roches” 2016 - $24.95 “Brilliant magenta. Aromas of fresh cherry and blueberry are complemented by suggestions of violet, licorice and spice cake. Stains the palate with appealingly sweet, spice-accented dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that smoothly meld concentration and vivacity. Shows excellent clarity and mineral lift on the subtly tannic finish, which leaves notes of bitter cherry and five-spice powder behind.” Vinous 93 Points
Domaine de la Chapelle des Bois Morgon “Rontay” 2015 - $17.95 “Chantal and Eric Coudert-Appert, the proprietors of the Domaine de la Chapelle des Bois, represent the seventh generation of this family line to work the vineyards of this estate in the heart of Fleurie. The domaine comprises 8.4 hectares of vineyards, all of which are hand-harvested. This energetic couple follows the precepts of “lutte raisonnée” when working the vineyards, which is to say they use an organic approach, treating the vines only when absolutely necessary to produce a healthy, ripe crop. At Domaine de la Chapelle des Bois, the wines are vinified in a traditional manner using a “semi-carbonic” maceration. The cuvaison extends for 10 to 15 days depending on the specific cuvée.” [From the importer’s web site.]
Guy Breton Morgon 2016 - $29.95 “Lurid ruby. A powerfully scented bouquet evokes primary red/blue fruits, incense and potpourri, and a hint of five-spice powder builds as the wine opens up. Juicy, concentrated and seamless in texture, offering sweet boysenberry, black raspberry and candied lavender flavors that show a suave blend of richness and energy. A smoky mineral note appears on the finish, which shows superb persistence and resonating blue fruit and floral qualities.” Vinous 94 Points
