Selections from Spectrum Direct:

Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2012
"Famous for the longevity of their Trebbiano. Brilliant straw. Nutty, exotic fruit nose and a little savoury and wild . . . . Way more aromatic on the nose and palate than the usual Trebbiano. Fine acidic vein on viscous palate. Dry finish and much more to come."
Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com

San Fereolo Dolcetto di Dogliani 2006
"Deep violet ruby. Pure cherry jam on the nose and the now familiar marsilia. Rich fruit captured by bitter tannin and very lively acidity. Very elegant and fragrant finish, despite the tannic muscle."
Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com

Tenute Sella Lessona Omaggio a Quintino Sella 2005
"The 2005 Lessona Omaggio a Quintino Sella brings together all of the best qualities of the region. It shows more than enough fruit to balance its structural components while retaining fabulous energy, not to mention balance. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are some of the notes that inform the round, engaging finish."

Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino 2010

"Coffee and chocolate aromas signal this exotic and fragrant red. The cherry and plum notes are almost afterthoughts, while spice, leather and tobacco flavors come to the fore, with vivid acidity through the lingering finish."

La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2010
". . . one of the most interesting wines of the vintage. Luigi Anania (with vineyards in the Sant'Angelo in Colle subzone) is a tried and true Brunello traditionalist who ages his wine in large oak casks for three and a half years. Despite that delicate approach, this wine is packed tight with power, color, enduring intensity and brooding masculinity. Instead of obvious fruit tones, your senses are awarded an exciting medley of balsam herb, cola, licorice and blackcurrant. This Brunello is dark, savory . . . . Despite its youth, it already shows a high level of complexity."

La Torre Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2009
"Another gorgeous wine, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captures the best qualities of this warm vintage in its open, resonant personality. At the same time, the flavors retain fabulous freshness for the year. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice, mint and sweet tobacco flesh out as this supple, beautifully expressive Brunello continues to open up in the glass. All the elements fall into place gracefully. Dried rose petal and cinnamon add the final layers of nuance. The 2009 Riserva is not especially complex, but it is absolutely delicious and a real joy to taste today. This is a big step up from the straight Brunello bottling."

Stella di Campalto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2009
"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is quite open-knit, radiant and accessible. Raspberry jam, white pepper, flowers, mint and sweet spices hove on the palate in a decidedly mid-weight Brunello that emphasizes grace and agility. The persistent, textured finish is striking. It will be interesting to see if the 2009 puts on weight in bottle, or if it remains the slghtly fragile, fleeting wine it is today. Stella di Campalto's wines never lack intrigue, that is for sure."

Stella di Campalto Brunello di Montalcino 2008
"One day, I would like to put Stella di Campalto’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino in a blind tasting with a handful of top-notch Burgundies and see how many people can pick this wine out. Sweet crushed flowers, savory herbs and cherries all waft from the glass. There is an ethereal, lifted, intensely perfumed quality to the 2008 that reminds me of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s wines . . . . it is very pretty."

Brovia Barolo Villero 2011
"The 2011 Barolo Villero exhibits a full body and thick concentration. Ultimately, this is one of my favorite wines from Brovia in this vintage. I love the muscle and heft that the wine shows, and the fact it delivers that power with the utmost elegance. Nothing is heavy or overdone here. You really get a sense of the quality of fruit achieved in the Villero vineyard. The wine shows integrated tannins and impeccable dark fruit balance."

Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigna Giachini 2010
"Focused, juicy and long, this red is packed with cherry, floral, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Still a bit tight now, but stays long. The sweet fruit returns on the finish. [Only] 542 cases made."
94 | Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

Brovia Barolo Rocche 2009
"Bright medium red. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, rose petal and mint. Juicy, youthfully tight and intense; not a rich style but elegant and perfumed, with good supporting minerality. No sign of overripeness here, unlike with many other 2009 Barolos from sandy soil. Finishes with building but ripe tannins and enticing lingering aromatic character. Very refined."

Paolo Bea Montefalco Sagrantino Secco dalla Vigna Pagliaro 2008
"Giampiero Bea is one of Umbria’s leading producers. The wines are made in a totally natural, non-interventionalist style, with no temperature control in fermentation, only natural yeasts and no added sulfites. At their best, these are wonderfully pure, expressive wines loaded with character."
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate
