"Dominique Lafon is one of the most renowned winemakers not just in Meursault but arguably in Burgundy. Of course, his winemaking extends beyond the boundaries of the Côte de Beaune, and he was one of the first to exploit the Mâconnais, where I suspect many others still pay little attention. You could say that Dominique was way ahead of the curve in that respect, having bought Domaine Janine Emmanuel back in September 1999 to form Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon. Trust me, whenever I meet Dominique it is clear that he is just as passionate and as serious about his range from the Mâconnais as his Montrachet. Of course, you cannot be in two places at once, and it is an hour's drive between Meursault and Milly, where his winery is based. So since 2006 the daily running is overseen by the talented Caroline Gon (who co-owns Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau with her husband, which I really must try). The vineyards are now converted to biodynamic and vinified either in stainless steel, foudres, or 600-litre demi-muids. In this matter, Dominique explained that he wants to keep the wood influence minimal and buys just one or two replacements each year .... these wines come highly recommended, and let's face it, how many bottles of that [Mâcon-Bussières] Le Monsard could you buy for a bottle of Dominique's Montrachet?

LES HÉRITIERS DU COMTE LAFON
VIRÉ-CLESSÉ 2020
"Shows a ripe passion fruit aroma, with a floral edge and a ripe, lush texture on the palate. Lafon is the owner of the Château de Clessé, with a number of parcels that total nearly 6ha planted in fairly deep clay soils, and some of the vines were planted in the 1950s. This is an early-ripening terroir, but the grapes were picked early and do not exceed 13% potential alcohol. Fermentation was done in large oak foudres and demi-muids."
