"I love it when lightning strikes twice. When I was introduced to the Fonterenza winery last year, it was through some stunning 2016 and 2017 Rosso di Montalcino, and what was easily one of the most balanced and enjoyable Brunellos from the 2014 vintage. Now, with the 2018 and 2019 Rosso, as well as the current-release 2013 Brunello (yes, they released 2014 before 2013), I’m left in awe. Margherita and Francesca Padovani, identical twins, can be found tending their biodynamic-certified vineyards in the hills of Sant’Angelo in Colle. The vineyards were planted by them, starting in 1999 and through 2005, the last being Vigna Alberello, which currently produces their Cru Rosso. The winemaking is as non-interventionist as possible, using native yeasts, long macerations and aging in a mix of neutral botti with some tonneaux. The richness and intensity found within the Fonterenza lineup is all about a pure communication of terroir, hailing from the warm, southern reaches of Montalcino; yet what makes these wines truly special is the detail and energy they capture as well .... Keep an eye on Fonterenza because something tells me that they won't remain under the radar for much longer."
