Josh Reynolds, Vinous Media on Domaine Durand "Among the under-the-radar producers in the northern Rhône, this 20-hectare domaine, has been run by brothers Eric and Joël Durand since 1996. It’s a shame because the wines warrant more attention while pricing is quite friendly given the quality delivered. Domaine Durand produces a collection of generous, fruit-driven and polished wines that’s led by three Cornas bottlings consistently among the most approachable of the appellation. New oak has played a part in all of the wines’ upbringing but I rarely find its statement to be pronounced. The Durands have been de-emphasizing the use of oak in recent vintages, much like many of their neighbors."

Cornas, the tiny appellation riddled with steep granite hillsides, produces some of the most distinctive, complex and enjoyable Syrah in the Northern Rhone. Among the famous producers are the legendary Auguste Clape, Thierry Allemand and Marcel Juge. Due to the rapidly increasing popularity and interest in these wines, the prices have gone up dramatically as well. Among some of the most underrated and undervalued producers of the region is Domaine Eric and Joël Durand.
The Cornas they farm is made into 3 different wines, the Prémices, Empreintes & Confidence. The Prémices is made of the youngest vines on granitic soils that produce a soft and elegant Cornas. The Empreintes is a powerful and concentrated wine that comes from a granite-based vineyard averaging around 15 years old. The Confidence comes from older vines in the 30+ range, that are also from granitic soils. This wine tends to have the most complexity, depth and minerality of all the offerings from this estate.

| "The 2016 Cornas Premices, from relatively young vines, has turned out well. Menthol, leather and plum combine on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and charming. Already easy to drink, it offers decent concentration and a long finish lined with soft, dusty tannins." 93 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2016 Cornas Empreintes features hints of cedar, brown sugar and dried spices layered over its plummy fruit (it was aged in 20% new oak, with the bulk in older wood). Full-bodied, supple and ripe, it's charming but with more stuffing than that word suggests, showing ample concentration and soft, dusty tannins on the long finish. . ." 95 Points Wine Advocate

| "The 2016 Cornas Confidence is the flagship cuvée of the estate and comes from the La Côte and Tézier lieux-dits in Cornas, both of which are shallow, granitic parcels. It's slightly tighter and more focused compared to the sexier Empreintes and has more cassis and blackberry fruits as well as lots of cedarwood, ground pepper, and earth-like aromatics. This full-bodied, concentrated 2016 has beautiful purity, a ripe, layered texture, and building tannins." 95+ Points Jeb Dunnuck
