He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of the Stags Leap District of the southern Napa Valley .... Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfectly as can be. But they have kept their feet, heads, and egos grounded, and they continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage ….
Shafer’s Hillside Estate Vineyard consists of 54 acres all on steep, amphitheater-like, rocky outcroppings and knolls. It receives the full benefit of southeasterly sunlight and enjoys the afternoon breezes that blow up from San Francisco Bay. An unusual geographic feature, this vineyard is essentially a box canyon. The topsoil is virtually nonexistent as the bed roots that reach into the white tofu volcanic soil base rarely extend more than 18 inches before hitting bedrock. This no doubt is a significant reason for the intense flavors achieved by the Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, and why it is able to spend 32 months in 100% new French oak without woody overtones.”

It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine." |
| | | | "A blend of 94% Syrah and 6% Petite Sirah, the 2018 Relentless looks to be just about sensational, offering a dense purple color as well as rich, loaded notes of blackberries, currants, smoked meats, peppery spice, and violets. Reminding me of a great Cornas on steroids with its gamy, exotic character paired with beautiful richness, it has fabulous purity, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This will undoubtedly be a great vintage for this cuvée, and my money is on it being one of the best yet."
