| "2020 is truly a brilliant vintage for Domaine Huet ..." John Gilman, View From The Cellar |
| | "Domaine Huet began picking on September 7th, which was also the earliest start to a harvest in the history of the Domaine …. The only complete collection of 2020s I have yet tasted are those from Domaine Huet in Vouvray, but from their lineup, we can see a microcosm of the vintage’s character. Like 2018, the roster of bottlings at Domaine Huet is more focused on the sweeter cuvées in 2020, as the vintage’s characteristics certainly favored these wines over the production of Sec. As I mentioned above, this probably works out nicely, as 2019 had been a very strong year for dry bottlings in Vouvray and Montlouis. Domaine Huet only produced one bottling of Sec in 2020, a lovely example from their le Mont vineyard. At the Demi-Sec level, there is not one from the Clos du Bourg in 2020, with all of the production there having gone to Moelleux and Moelleux Première Trie bottlings, as well as, one imagines, contributing to a 2020 Cuvée Constance somewhere down the line. 2020 is truly a brilliant vintage for Domaine Huet and I cannot wait to see more …" John Gilman, View From The Cellar |
| | | "Domaine Huet, perhaps Vouvray's most famous name, was founded almost a century ago [in 1928]. An early adopter of biodynamics, it was certified in 1993 when even organic producers were considered to be hippies. Today, Domaine Huet is run by Sarah Hwang, whose family bought the estate in 2003.
Production of wine styles (from dry to sweet) varies depending on the season, and the seasons are becoming more erratic every year. In 2018, around 85% of production was sweet, and they were able to make the rare, sweet cuvée, Constance. The original vineyard, Le Haut Lieu is a clay-based vineyard which was first purchased in 1928 by founder Gaston Huet. It now covers 15 hectares and remains the most fruit-forward of the estate’s sites. The addition of Clos du Bourg came in 1953. It’s a real clos, surrounded by walls and is a little warmer than the other sites making it the first of the Huet vineyards to be picked. Conversely, the Le Mont vineyard, which was acquired in 1957, has a greenish yellow clay soil with flint scattered throughout, making it a cooler site; it is picked the latest and takes time to express itself fully in the glass. No matter the site or the sweetness level, there is an ethereal and elegant quality to these wines that defies scientific analysis." Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.com |
| | | | ‣ "The 2017 Vouvray Pétillant Brut from Domaine Huet is a lovely bottle. The bouquet is bright and focused, wafting from the glass in a mix of quince, dried flowers, chalky soil tones, a hint of menthol and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, young and racy, with a fine core, good soil signature, a lovely spine of acidity and a long, well-balanced, complex and quite dry finish. This wine always ages brilliantly and the 2017 will be another long-distance runner, but it is certainly already quite tasty out of the blocks." 92 John Gilman, View From The Cellar |
| | | | ‣ "The 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux offers a deep, complex and concentrated bouquet of highly ripe and candied fruits yet with this coolish shimmering lime zest probably coming from the pebbly silex and deep green clay soil of this nine-hectare grand cru. Full-bodied, rich and round on the palate, this is a dense, viscous, mouth-filling, lush and mellow yet also tight and piquant Le Mont whose complexity is lifted by dramatic drive and tension and carried to a long and salivating finish by lingering salinity. You can never go wrong in buying a Le Mont and in particular this one. This is a great effort from a very particular vintage that forced the harvest team to make the strictest selections. It was well worth the effort." 96 Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate |
| ‣ "Delicate exotic characters such as dried papaya and pineapple sit alongside floral notes. While there's excellent concentration, this remains delicate. The finish is appetizing thanks to fine acidity and phenolic structure, which hold the mouth reassuringly on the finish. An excellent wine that offers real drinkability in youth thanks to its appealing primary fruit, but there's no hurry at all to drink." 96 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.com |
| ‣ "Here is a masterful sweet wine endowed with 49g/L of residual sugar that offers an almost unprecedented delicacy for the estate that contrasts with its powerful aromatics resonating with pineapple, passionfruit and apricot, along with a seductive floral component. On the palate, the rich liqueur character retains impressive balance and restrained power, combining unctuousness and chalky acidity. Best to cellar for 10 to 40 years." 96 Yohan Castaing, Decanter Magazine |
