| | Do you know your Napa wines? Think you do? Let’s see if you can answer these three questions correctly (no cheating!):
- When was Napa Valley established as an American Viticultural Area (AVA)?
- What’s the name of the latest Nested AVA that was approved?
- How many Nested AVAs are there within the Napa Valley AVA?
Napa Valley was officially established as an AVA on February 27, 1981. As our understanding of the region's diverse microclimates deepens, new Nested AVAs (also known as Sub-AVAs) have been carved out to recognize their distinct characteristics.
The first two Nested AVAs—Los Carneros and Howell Mountain—were established in 1983. Since then, the list has grown to include Wild Horse Valley, Stags Leap District, Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, Spring Mountain District, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Chiles Valley, Yountville, Diamond Mountain District, Oak Knoll District, Calistoga, Coombsville, and most recently, Crystal Springs, approved in 2024.
In total, 17 Nested AVAs now make up the rich tapestry of Napa Valley.
Each of these AVAs deserves a spotlight of its own, but today, we’ll highlight two mountain sites and three valley floor sites. You’ll find wines from all of these regions in our current auction—there’s something for every palate.
|
| Oakville Oakville is the Mecca of Napa Valley, home to iconic producers like Screaming Eagle, Opus One, and Beckstoffer To Kalon. Thanks to Beckstoffer To Kalon, this AVA has produced more 100-point wines than any other in the valley.
|
| Rutherford Winemaking legend André Tchelistcheff famously said, “It takes Rutherford Dust to grow great Cabernet Sauvignon.”
|
| St. Helena
With a long and rich history, St. Helena is home to Dr. Crane Vineyard—one of the most sought-after fruit sources in Napa. Interestingly, the site was once home to a Chinatown in the late 19th century.
|
| Howell Mountain
Part of the eastern mountain range of Napa, Howell Mountain is where living legend Randy Dunn made his name.
|
| Spring Mountain
Located on the western side of Napa Valley, Spring Mountain is Cabernet country—but you’ll also find small plantings of Riesling and Pinot Noir adding a touch of diversity.
