| "The Bret Brothers have no lack of press, especially attracting the attention of more 'intelligent' press. Their talent is undeniable, and their charisma will no doubt aid them in their efforts in raising the standards of the Mâconnais appellation."
Becky Wasserman & Co.
"Jean-Philippe Bret noted that 'the 2019 growing season is easy to describe as we had a bad incidence of frost in April and the rest of the season was essentially hot and dry with no disease pressure to speak of. The flowering didn't pass especially well either as there was quite a bit of shatter. Other than those aspects, there's not too much out of the ordinary to report save for us stressing over the level of hydric stress some of our vines suffered. We finally chose to begin picking on the 10th of September and, happily, the fruit was ripe and clean except that there just wasn't very much of it as yields were down some 50%. What is so remarkable about the style of the 2019s though is that they don't really remind you of what is typical for hot vintage wines. In particular, they have excellent terroir definition, which isn't something that hot and dry vintages usually produce. I like them quite a bit though it would have been nice to have more of them!' I noted this last year, but it bears repeating that with the 2018 vintage, the brothers will no longer accept any fruit that was treated chemically or even farmed conventionally." | | | "Aromas of ripe stone fruit, buttercups, lemons and some yoghurt. Full-bodied, supple and creamy with vibrant acidity. Delicious finish with excellent concentration."
James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com 93
"... There is both good verve and freshness to the delicious, round and rich medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by lemon-tinged acidity where a hint of citrus zest bitter arises. This lightly stony effort is quite good too and more classically styled."
Allen Meadows, Burghound
"From two north-facing sites, the 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Terres de Vergisson unwinds in the glass with notes of honeycomb, citrus zest, white flowers and warm bread. Medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, with a satiny attack and a saline finish, this has turned out well. The Bret Brothers' négociant house is a fine source of elegant, classy Mâconnais wines derived from fruit that's either organically farmed or in organic conversion and deftly vinified by this talented and industrious duo. Fermentations with ambient microflora, long élevage and discretion with oak are the order of the day at this address. More concentrated than the giving, open-knit 2018 vintage, the 2019s at this address nonetheless avoid the potential excesses of the year, too. Seamless and nicely balanced, it's a fine success." 92 William Kelley, Wine Advocate
