| | | The Donnall Cellar is replete with Port bottlings from all of the A-List producers and renowned vintages. Ports are still a desirable inclusion in any thoughtful collection of legendary world wines. While there are many players, some of the key houses to be aware of are Cockburn, Dow, Fonseca, Graham, Quinta do Noval, Sandeman, Smith Woodhouse, Taylor Fladgate and Warre. Each house has a unique style. James Suckling’s superlative work, Vintage Port, provides imbibers and collectors alike with a succinct and accurate summary.
In terms of vintages, collectors tend to gravitate towards 1960, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1977, 1983 and 1985. All of the above are formidable and worthy of pursuit. All are also in their prime window of drinkability. Suckling’s tome also provides valuable information and guidance with regards to the characteristics of each of the above. More recent greatness can be procured via the 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2011 vintages. Most of these, however, are still in their “hold” phase.
