| | | | "The 2020 Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes has turned out brilliantly, bursting with aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet spices, rose petals and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's gourmand but remarkably elegant, with powdery tannin, lively acids and a seamless, charming profile. As readers will remember, this ultra-traditional cuvée is mostly whole cluster and sees a classic two-week maceration with submerged cap before maturation in foudre. As I've written before, Thomas Patenôtre today superintends this five-hectare Moulin-à-Vent domaine, continuing to fashion resolutely classical expressions of the appellation, perpetuating the style favored by Bernard Diochon. Old vines from some of the appellation's finest sectors, whole-cluster vinification, classical macerations and élevage in foudre are the order of the day. Patenôtre is on a roll, as the 2020 has turned out especially well. What's more, there are positive changes afoot in the vineyards, as herbicides are abandoned in favor of mechanical cultivation, and organic conversion is planned in the near future."
