“… Winemaker Phillip Pfunder continues to coax greater finesse from the estate’s beautifully situated 80 acres of mountaintop vineyard. That should come as no surprise, as Pfunder attended winemaking school in New Zealand, where he also worked at Kumeu River before stints at Château Angélus in Bordeaux and at Screaming Eagle. The goal here has always been to make expressive wines that represent the region, but with the complexity and energy that can come from mountain-grown fruit, ‘especially with the limestone-dominated soils and closeness to the ocean that we have on the west side,’ Pfunder said. This is among the highest-altitude sites in the AVA, sitting between 1,600 and 1,900 feet above sea level, and the slow, steady growing season ‘allows for great flavor intensity to go with the richness.’”

"These latest releases from Law Estate Wines ... are jaw droppingly good, and easily the greatest wines to come from this new estate."

LAW ESTATE
PROPRIETARY RED AUDACIOUS 2019
"The 2019 Audacious is a blend of 31% Grenache, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Carignan and 17% Syrah, matured 19 months in 51% new French oak. Medium ruby-purple, it has dynamic aromas ranging from cassis and blue fruit to tobacco, bay leaves and dark spices, and it reveals lovely floral nuances with time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate has a soft, dusty texture, seamless acidity and a fan of spice and floral notes on the long, uplifted finish."

"Ripe red and black berry fruits, toasted spice, chalky minerality, and ground pepper are just some of the nuances here, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, seamless texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. I'm a big fan, and this knockout bottle of wine will drink well for a decade."

"Vivid ruby. Expressive, smoke-accented raspberry, cherry cola, exotic spice and floral aromas show fine clarity and pick up a mocha nuance with air. Chewy and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated red and dark berry liqueur, fruitcake and candied lavender flavors that show energetic back-end cut. The long, sappy finish features resonating cherry and spice notes and steadily building tannins."

2019:
“Looking at the growing season, this was a departure from the drought years of 2016, 2017, and 2018, and the region received a welcome cooler, wetter winter and spring. The growing season can be broken up into two parts, the cool, wet weather up through the early parts of June, which helped saturate the water table and delayed flowering and bud break, followed by a warmer, dry period in July, August, September, and October. Vine health was outstanding throughout the year and yields (aside from Grenache, which shattered due to cool weather at flowering) are close to average. One notable point on the vintage was the lack of heat spikes, and while most growing seasons see 10-12 days above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, 2019 saw only 6 days. This all shows in the wines. They have a smooth, supple, easygoing feel that mirrors the even growing season, and the warmth at the end of the year resulted in ample ripeness and richness while still not blowing out the aromatics. The 2019s have plenty of up-front appeal and, in general, are more approachable than the more tannic, structured 2018s. The important difference between 2018 and 2019 is the lack of hydric stress and warmer later season weather as well as fewer diurnal swings in 2019, which resulted in slightly softer, more rounded wines. While I think 2019 slots in just behind 2018, both vintages have their own style and are loaded with brilliant wines.”
