"For those who might not know, Accendo Cellars is the latest venture from Bart and Daphne Araujo. After selling their namesake winery and its Eisele Vineyard in 2013, the couple purchased the Wheeler Farms property in Yountville in 2015, with the first crush at the winery there taking place in 2016. 'It's a zero-compromise facility,' says Nigel Kinsman . . . . 'We love the business,' said Bart, before we started our tasting. 'Knowing a lot of the legends that took us under our wings, we were exposed to a lot of older wines—and most of them were blends. We know where a lot of the best vineyards are. Our friends won't sell us the vineyards but will sell us the grapes. And so, we're trying to recreate the Napa Valley blend.' Daphne chimes in, 'We're looking for what we consider balanced wines.' The 2019 Accendo Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled in late January 2022, after a longer time in barrel than previous vintages. A blend of six different sites, the largest component comes from Vine Hill Ranch, with other major portions coming from Ecotone [aka Thorevilos] and Sleeping Lady. There will be no 2020. 'It's really unfortunate,' said Bart, 'because it was a perfect growing season.' We did have a chance to taste several components that are likely to go into the 2021, which Kinsman described as, 'Just a delightful vintage; threw us no curve balls, fine-grained tannins.'

These wines are terrific representations of Napa Valley, revealing the charm, complexity and elegance that the region can deliver when execution is near perfect."

LAUREA 2019
"Winemaker Françoise Peschon has produced the wines here from the first vintage in 2013. A mix of Darnajou, Taransaud and Sylvain coopers provide a tapestry of beautiful cedar spice and cigar box notes. Full-bodied, creamy and dark, leading with crème de cassis and layered with chocolate and mint. Long beams of sappy tannins glide to an earthy finish."

"The 2019 Laurea is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc. The nose is wonderfully perfumed, offering scents of red roses, Ceylon tea and licorice over a core of warm cassis, blueberry compote and kirsch with a touch of tilled soil. Full-bodied, ripe and juicy in the mouth, it has a velvety texture and a spicy kick to the finish. 795 cases were made."

"[Françoise] Peschon represents the best chance Napa's got at remaining vibrant. Best known as winemaker for Araujo Estate from 1993 to 2013, she is now a consultant, making the wines for Heimark, Cornell, Accendo, Matt Morris, and Piedra Hill in addition to Vine Hill Ranch, plus a small label, Drinkward Peschon, which she co-owns with her best friend, Lisa Drinkward. But unlike many of Napa's premier winemaking consultants, known for imprinting a homogeneous style on all the wines they touch, Peschon has no signature stamp. She believes 'a winemaker is a means to an end,' she says.' 'You have to justify the site' ....

Peschon's steady, faithful course has been its own sort of revolution in Napa Valley over the last 34 years - a revolution fought not in public, not in magazine headlines, but in the private, daily work of making wine. Waves of critics, fads, and fickle customers never swayed her from her true path. And maybe that's the path that Napa needs now. 'I just have to believe,' she says, 'that in the end, the classics don't go out of fashion.'"
