| | | In 1978, Sassicaia sparked a revolution when it vanquished 32 of the world’s greatest Cabernets, including Bordeaux First Growths, in a highly publicized London blind tasting. Suddenly, new estates began popping up along the Tuscan Coast, all trying to emulate Sassicaia. The one that’s come closest, while remaining a world away from its price, is Montepeloso.
The 15-acre Montepeloso property is situated very close to another Suvereto-based “Super-Tuscan” icon, Tua Rita, and was purchased in 1998 by Swiss-born Fabio Chiarelotto—who, immediately upon arrival, began restructuring the property’s six terroirs to find the ideal mix of vines and rootstocks. With a site this close to the Mediterranean, at a point where the landscape begins to rise and soils become less fertile and rockier, with enough altitude to mitigate some of the heat and provide superior drainage to the heavier soils of the sites on the plains. Eneo is predominantly Sangiovese, with just a third Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of the local Malvasia Nera. The wine is aged 10 months in used French barriques and tonneaux for the perfect oak influence. The kinship between terroir and the native grapes is why the 2022 Eneo is so exceptional.
Massive respect to Sassicaia and Tue Rita of course, but this wine drinks like a delicious Super Tuscan that won’t cost you $250+. But you’ll enjoy the finesse, structure, and soul – along with the serious value.
