| "If there is one estate that embodies the potential of Carmignano, Piaggia might very well be it." |
| | "Today, the winery is owned and operated by Silvia Vannucci, who I was able to tour the vineyards with during my recent visit. We don’t often talk about the vineyards of Carmignano and how important they have been throughout history, but this is a region that was prized by Italian royalty for its wines for over 800 years - and one that began cultivating Cabernet over 300 years ago, a tradition that still remains a large part of what makes Carmignano different from other wines in Tuscany. The founder of Piaggia, Mauro Vannucci, saw the potential here after buying his first vineyard from the historic Capezzana winery in 1970, the same 2.5-hectare vineyard that continues to produce the Piaggia Carmignano Riserva.
The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot found throughout these 50-year-old vines are said to have been planted from cuttings taken from Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux. All of the plantings throughout the vineyards acquired by Piaggia since have been through massal selection from these same vines. Today, Piaggia oversees 15 hectares of vineyards, ranging from 190 to 250 meters above sea level, to create their portfolio of crus and blends. |
| | The style is one of pure elegance and class, without relying heavily on oak influence. In fact, at this time, the estate Carmignano is refined completely in 2nd and 3rd-pass barrique, while the Riserva and Poggio de'Colli see no more than 10% new oak, as Silvia Vannucci has full confidence in the fruit her vineyards supply. Frankly speaking, Piaggia is the estate that has kept Carmignano on the map; and while there are a number of up-and-coming as well as long-time producers making great wines, Silvia Vannucci has already set the benchmark quite high .... You simply can’t go wrong here."

| ‣ "The darkly alluring 2020 Cabernet Franc Poggio de'Colli takes its time in the glass, slowly awakening with a dusty mix of red currants, pepper-tinged rose, exotic curries and the slightest touch of animal musk that adds gravitas. This is velvety smooth yet finessed. It's cool-toned in feel with a potent wave of tart raspberry fruits that saturates the palate with savory spice and mineral tones. It leaves a coating of fine tannins and a staining of berry concentration through the finale, tapering off sapid and long, yet perfectly balanced. What a radiant vintage for the Poggio de' Colli, Piaggia's varietal Cabernet Franc. Revisit it in five years to see some real sparks fly …. one of the top styles of the variety in all of Italy." 97 Eric Guido, Vinous |
