"Mount Eden is one of the truly elite wineries in the United States.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Mount Eden →
"... In spite of travelling a bit below the radar, the wines here at Mount Eden Vineyards remain utterly superb and should be on everyone’s short list of must-have estates from this outstanding region of California, as Mount Eden remains one of the greatest producers in the United States today.

Mount Eden is equally adroit with all three grape varieties that it has produced since its earliest days, with the Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Cabernet Sauvignons produced here amongst the very finest examples of their respective wines in America. The winery is one of the oldest and home to some of the most historic vineyards in all of California, as this isolated Santa Cruz Mountains retreat, poised 2,000 feet above sea level, was first opened in Saratoga in the 1940s by one of the state’s seminal wine figures, Martin Ray, prior to its changing ownership and becoming christened as Mount Eden Vineyards in 1972.

Martin Ray first purchased the mountainside parcels and planted the vineyards that would become the backbone of Mount Eden all the way back in 1943, when his first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines went into these mountainside slopes .... All of the vineyards at Mount Eden continue to be cropped at low yields and dry farmed in cooler mountain zones, with the slow ripening in these vineyards one of estate’s great advantages over many of their colleagues in the more torrid sections of the California wine world. It is this cooler microclimate that helps produce the great longevity found in the wines of Mount Eden, whether they be Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon and indeed, these are amongst California’s longest-lived wines (as the note on the stunning 1974 Chardonnay will attest).
John Gilman, View From The Cellar

"The secret behind Mount Eden’s success with all three varieties and the longevity of the wines is terroir: thin soils, a cool microclimate, east-facing exposure, high elevation, and long, slow ripening – plus [Jeffrey] Patterson’s winemaking. Established in 1981, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA was among the first in California to be defined by mountain topography. Its boundary follows the morning fog line around the range. 'We have a moderate microclimate between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which gives us a long growing season and good acidity,' explains Patterson. 'And our soils are old – the San Andreas Fault is one mile away – and the vineyards are dry farmed' ....

Bit by bit, over nearly two decades, Patterson replaced [Martin] Ray’s vines, mostly with cuttings from the original ones. He’s never wavered from a low-tech, non-intervention, balanced style of wine, even when the fashion was for fruit-bomb Cabernets, oaky-rich Chardonnays and Pinots that tasted more like Syrah. He’s a traditionalist, but over the years he has fine-tuned his winemaking."

Mount Eden
Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2017
82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and Malbec
"A brilliant, youthful, unevolved wine that will give Ridge's Monte Bello a run for its money, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a wonderful perfume of blackcurrants, blueberries, lead pencil, vanilla bean, exotic flowers, tobacco, and bouquet garni. Needing plenty of air to show at its best, it's medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a concentrated, powerful style, ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, aged in used French and American oak, it's going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 30-40 years of overall longevity."

"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is going to need a number of years to come around. The only question is how many. In 2017, the Mount Eden Cabernet is shockingly opulent. Inky black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, leather and incense are all dialed up in this super-sized Cabernet. Even so, there is plenty of structure lurking beneath. I can't wait to see how this ages."
