| | | It is indeed a rarity that a Bordeaux First Growth releases a new wine. You have to go back to the 1980's to find the last time Chateau Lafite Rothschild release its second wine, Carruades de Lafite. Situated just across Bordeaux’s famous D2 (Chateau Route) road, within direct sight of Lafite’s prestigious Chateau building and lush grounds – and around the corner from Cos d’Estournel in the neighbouring Saint-Estephe appellation – the Anseillan plot extends on steep, north-facing slopes reaching a peak that measures roughly the same height as both the Lafite and Carruades. Anseillan's second vintage, the first was 2018, the 2019, is a rich, muscular wine, yet it is soft and velvety in the mouth. As you would expect from Lafite, it is extremely well-balanced. Already in its prime drinking window, the '19 Anseillan will last for another decade.

Less immediately lively, bright and accessible than the 2018 but still stylish with a sense of character. Cool blue fruits meld with mint, liquorice, flint and touches of toast.
