Why We Need More Male Early Childhood Educators
Can you remember the first time you had a male teacher? What grade were you in? If it was later in your school experience, you’re not alone. Male educators in early childhood classrooms are rare—but they’re also incredibly valuable.
When children see male teachers express emotions, offer encouragement, and create a safe learning space, it helps break down gender stereotypes. They see men as nurturers and caretakers, which fosters an inclusive and enriching learning environment.
Leslie Smith, an early childhood educator at Little Explorers Learning Academy, describes it best.
“Being an educator makes me extremely happy. Every day is a new adventure full of fun, learning, and love. The children’s curiosity and strength inspire me.”
Male educators can also encourage more engagement from fathers and father figures, creating even deeper connections within the community.
That’s why the Your Career, Our Future campaign, a collaboration between Trying Together and the Early Excellence Project, is working to recruit and retain as many early childhood educators as possible. They’re collecting inspiring stories from teachers and families to encourage more people to consider this transformative career.
