BROWN MAMA MONOLOGUES Celebrates Black Motherhood for a Third Year Saturday, May 9th, 2020
6PM VIP Reception | Showtime 7PM Sharp
@ August Wilson African-American Cultural Center 980 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
For the third year in a row, Brown Mamas will debut it’s annual celebration of Black motherhood, The Brown Mama Monologues. In 2018 and 2019 the yearly showcase of 10 Black mothers telling their original stories about motherhood was performed before sold-out audiences. This year’s show is hoping to draw large crowds at the August Wilson African-American Cultural Center on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
The Brown Mama Monologues is fiscally sponsored by New Sun Rising. The project has received support from both the Heinz Endowments Small Arts Initiative and The Opportunity Fund.
“Pittsburgh’s Black community has long been hungry for social changes especially when it comes to how our basic social interactions are categorized and defined in the city. The Brown Mama Monologues is a reflection of that. Black mothers are standing up and defining the act of parenting for themselves and putting the city on notice that their version, our version, of motherhood is valid, should be respected and deserves support,” said Muffy Mendoza, executive producer of The Brown Mama Monologues and founder of Brown Mamas.
