A new voice on the Pittsburgh theater scene, Gold Pyramid Screen and Stage, LLC, has announced itself as “telling the stories mainstream won’t” with Lorenzo Boone’s play, The Awakening.
The play, opening at Community College of Allegheny County Auditorium on February 16, 2024, is the company’s first local stage production. The Awakening addresses the influence of gangs and peer pressure through the character of Jason, whose loyalties are being reshaped by those who love him.
Gold Pyramid bills itself as “an entertainment production company that will supply high quality motion pictures, television shows, stage plays and special events. We envision a progressive, inclusive and socially economic company, managed by experienced, committed Hollywood trained executives and staff. While we anticipate attracting talent from New York and Los Angeles, our goals and commitment are to train and employ local Pittsburgh youth and young adults to work as apprentices to explore the dynamic entertainment industry.”
The Awakening includes some familiar names from Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company productions and other local stages, including Dionysius Akeem (Jason), who studied acting at CCAC South campus, James Perry (Rick), Leslie “Ezra” Smith (Mr. Abdullah) and Les Howard (Mr. Abdullah alternate). The cast also includes Katy “Willa” Cotten (Grandma Sadie), Amon Baldwin-Youngblood (Chico), Day Ricks (Chico / Rick Alternate), Tracy Clark (Stacie), Denise Sheffey-Powell (Stacie alternate), Seth Whitted (Johnnie) and Rodney Poteat and Dayvonne Ricketts (gang members).
Lorenzo Boone holds a BA in Theatre and Business from the University of Pittsburgh, a masters from Wilkes University in Creative Writing and a MFA from Point Park University in Writing for the Screen and Stage. Additionally, he underwent the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Intensive (2017) and became a Pittsburgh Filmmaker/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Fellow. Learn more about the playwright here.
