As part of a study on disparity in the state’s contracting process, Department of General Services Secretary Curt Topper will kick-off meetings in Pittsburgh on January 30 and Erie on January 31, seeking comments from businesses and individuals on their experiences with the procurement system.
Governor Wolf is committed to improving the participation of small and small diverse businesses in state government contracting and the commonwealth’s overall economy. The governor signed an executive order in September 2015 to solidify the effort and launched the disparity study last October. Results of the study, which will include PennDOT’s transportation and infrastructure contracting, will serve as an empirical basis for determining the extent to which small diverse businesses face discrimination in the state contracting process.
“The information gathered through these public meetings will be integral in helping to determine the depth and breadth of the issues our small and small diverse businesses are facing in their interactions with the commonwealth’s procurement system,” Topper said. “Using this information along with other information gathered through the study, we will we be able to develop a plan of action to improve the quality and quantity of opportunities that exist for our small and small diverse businesses.”
Small diverse businesses and disadvantaged businesses are businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans, disabled veterans, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBT community.
The public meetings provide a forum for small and small diverse businesses and disadvantaged businesses to learn more about the study process from the disparity study consultant; ask questions about the study; and provide public or private testimony on their experiences working in the state government contracting market. |
