One of the youngest MacArthur Genius winners ever, Kara Walker is renowned for her compelling large-scale works and provocative silhouettes. In this striking exhibition of work, Kara Walker overlays silkscreen figures in solid black silhouette over enlarged illustrations from Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War published in 1866. Shown with Kara Walker’s series is a group of original Harper’s Weekly engravings by 19th-century American realist Winslow Homer (1846-1910), offering opportunities to consider similarities and distinctions between past and present.
