Kente Arts Alliance presents THE COOKERS
Saturday, February 19, 2022 | 8PM
@ The New Hazlett Theater 6 Allegheny Square East, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
For fourteen years, the hard bop supergroup The Cookers has been dazzling audiences with their exciting sounds and original compositions. This all-star septet is comprised of jazz luminaries Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, Donald Harrison and David Weiss. The distinction “supergroup” derives from the fact that each member is a leader of his own group.
-------------
Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Billy Hart and Eddie Henderson played major roles in the hardbop landscape of the sixties. Eddie Henderson and Billy Hart were part of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi group; Cecil McBee was the bassist in Charles Lloyd’s prolific quartet in the 60’s. Billy Harper was a part of trumpeter Lee Morgan’s last group as well as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and George Cables has performed with legends Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper.
-------------
Donald Harrison and David Weiss, the youngest members of the group, have played with Art Blakey, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.
-------------
Billy Hart and Donald Harrison were the recipients of the 2022 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for Jazz Advocacy. This is the highest honor that the United States bestows on jazz artists.
-------------
The Cookers have released six critically acclaimed recordings which include Warriors, Cast the First Stone, Believe, Time and Time Again (which was the iTunes Jazz CD of the Year in 2014), The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart and Look Out!
