The Entertainment Consortium Inc. African American Conservatory is excited to open its inaugural season with a production of Ruined.
Set in war-torn Congo, this stirring play by Lynn Nottage revolves around Mama Nadi – a club owner who shelters young women considered to be “ruined” – that is, young women who have been raped and their bodies mutilated, and thus have been rejected by their families and communities. Through gripping scenes and penetrating monologues, this 2009 Pulitzer Prize winning play challenges us to confront the ambiguities surrounding Mama Nadi’s help, which can seem sometimes to be genuine and comforting, while at other times, exploitative. But Ruined also takes us on a journey with Congolese soldiers, commoners, and the young women themselves as they wrestle with troubled pasts and uncertain futures.
Since its premiere in Chicago in 2008, Ruined has been performed in New York City, Detroit, Denver, Ashland, Washington D.C., Boston, and internationally in London, Toronto, Ipswich, among other cities. We are thrilled to be the first company to offer a fully-staged production in Pittsburgh at the August Wilson Center on July 22 and 24, 2016. We feel the play’s focus on Africa, human rights, and women’s lives will be a unique and important contribution to Pittsburgh’s theatrical landscape.
