The University of Pittsburgh Jazz Program will feature Pittsburgh drum talents Roger Humphries and James Johnson III in a three-day event bringing drums to the forefront of the jazz listening experience. It is undeniable that the rhythms in jazz and other music of the African diaspora have been irresistible to fans worldwide, and “Give the Drummer Some” will give audiences a closer listen to the role of drums in the context of solos, duos and a variety of ensembles. This event will also celebrate the announcement of the new jazz fund for Pitt students which has been generously donated by the family of Martin Shor.

On Thursday, November 4, 2021, at 7:00 p.m., Pitt’s Jazz Director, Nicole Mitchell Gantt will host Episode 4 of her Jazz Talk series on Zoom. Professor Gantt, Roger Humphries and James Johnson III will discuss their outstanding careers and expound on the history and role of the drum set in jazz.

On Friday, November 5, 2021, at 7:30 p.m., the Jazz Program will celebrate the new Martin Shor Fund for jazz students. The event will showcase performances by Pitt student ensembles including; AFROPOP, Small Jazz Combos, and the Pitt Jazz Ensemble. The ensembles will perform works by drum composers and works highlighting the drum set.

On Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 7:30 p.m., the Jazz Program will host the culminating concert, “Drum Conversation,” featuring drummers Roger Humphries and James Johnson III in duo.

Performances on November 5-6 will be streamed live from Bellefield Hall Auditorium. Limited in-person attendance for Pitt students, faculty and staff is available. Registration is free and required.
