Subject: Control Comfort Eating........
Friend
How many times have you found yourself eating something and you are not even conscious of it until you have finished it?
How would you like to be able to control this behaviour?
How many times have you found yourself eating other than when you are hungry?
How would you like to gain control of comfort eating?
Comfort eating is simply a learned behaviour where the mind has associated a way of getting back some sort of comfort through food. This happens when you are feeling a certain way such as low, bored, stressed, tired, etc the learned behaviour then kicks in to make you feel the way you want to feel like better or comforted.
Here is something you can do to deal with this behaviour yourself, the aim is to interrupt the pattern and send the behaviour in a new direction away from the behaviour of comfort eating.
1.Identify the feeling you have just before the feeling of needing to eat. This will be the negative emotion such as boredom, stress etc
2.Be aware that once you feel the emotion the next stage may be a craving or an urge to eat.
3.Decide on something you can do at anytime when you get this negative emotion before you feel the urge to eat. It could be go for a walk, call someone on the telephone, something to take your attention off it.
You could also think of other things that make you feel good, happy etc
This simple series of steps can stop the urge to comfort eat and over time you will begin to develop another learned behaviour which will replace the one of comfort eating.
I hope that you find this useful.
