Vine Travels-Orange The Hidden Gem!
Orange has only been on the wine radar recently but the truth is that many talented winemakers have been setting a benchmark rather high for quite some time.
I recently was shown around the area and unlike other high altitude places that display steep cliffs and deep valleys that give the Altitude more noticeable significance. Orange district wines start at around 600m above sea level and extends to the near the peak of Mt Canobolas at around 1000metres.
This height makes winemaking very marginal but also exciting due to the retention of natural acidity making Sauvignon Blanc,Chardonnay and Pinot Noir go to varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon site specific but with great cellaring capabilities whilst Shiraz left me underwhelmed in most cases unless used in a blend for aromatic enhancement.
I was given the “Good Juice” from fellow wine enthusiasts at a great little Wine Bar called Ferment situated in the town and it was great to see that the area is patriotic towards its own as most of the wine’s by the glass were from Orange.

I have collated my notes and the Winners are:
Vine Top 5-Orange NSW

1.Canobolas Smith Reserve Cabernet 2004
. This gem blew me away with generous blackcurrant, plums, mulberries, chocolate balanced by a graphite structural tannin finishing clean and ever so moreish.
A wine made by Murray Smith probably the most likeable character around and once we engaged him in wine chatter, the enthusiasm explosion was worth the 3hr drive alone.
Hint: (If you are lucky enough to visit his winery )Pick one of his apples in between whites & reds it is an absolute gem of a palate cleanser

2.De Salis Wild Fume Blanc 2013
Situated at the highest point of Mount Canobolas this winery is picture perfect with scenery that is simply stunning. The cost of tasting seemed a little contentious as the wines need to stand up especially if they want to sell for the prices being asked But this wine made me feel happy to and the hostess once I explained chose to waver the fee.Yippee!
A wine of complexity with Tropical fruits consisting of passionfruit, guava, pineapple and green apple coupled with delicate use of texture making this a wine with depth and complexity.
I think this wine displays the hallmarks of a European Fume Blanc but without the excessive price Tag!
RRP $37.95

3.Brangayne Pinot Noir 2013
This winery was absolutely beautiful in autumn with colours of trees that makes your stare into the abyss in amazement. The cellar door is a humble insulated barn with old barrels as tasting benches and the host is a gentleman who just let’s his wine do the talking.
The pinot noir displays nicely weighted cherry, truffle, xmas cake flavours with a harmonious use of spicy French oak mouth coating and very, very drinkable.
The key is having enough ripe fruit yet not being over ripe and this is what makes this wine delicious whilst also very affordable.
RRP $34.95
Vine Deal $27.95 in any 6

4.Canobolas Smith Shine Chardonnay 2008
The tasting gets very serious once chardonnay is discussed as the region is bound to get many awards in the future as it has many already but once again Murray Smith takes the cake with the best chardonnay which would rival not just the best in Australia but give the French a run for their money!
I loved the oak and the core lines of acidity coupled with the delicate stone fruit& citrus that made me feel like I was having a Chassagne Montrachet moment!
RRP $59.95
Vine Deal $43.95 in any 6

5.Brangayne The Tristan 2012
This wine displayed ticked all the boxes yet I would highly recommend a good decant as it’s a bit tightly wound without.
The rule of thumb is great wine appreciates the “Be mean keep it keen approach” and this applies for the structure which is present but the body is hidden yet ready to explode with flavour.
Flavours of dark chocolate, cherries and spice interwoven in a neat tight package .
RRP $34.95
