Hi Friend
Dear Vine Clubbers,
May was a particularly hard month for whites with only 2 making the Top 10 whilst the standard of the reds was exceptional.
Alternate varietals are making more of a presence in our tastings as we lean towards more food friendly styles, whilst still the established regions and coincidently know varietal standouts of those regions clearly dominated.

So without further waffling the Winners are:
Butterfly Sauvignon Blanc 2016–Wairarapa NZ
Perfumed aromas of lime, passionfruit with subdued grassy notes leads to a palate of the same held in check with crisp and refreshing acidity.
A quaffable wine that is a perfect partner to seafood and pasta or just for a drink on a warm autumn afternoon.
RRP $16.95

Highgate Chardonnay 2016-Orange NSW
Orange region forging a reputation not only for producing quality but also affordable wines, and this is probable the best value Vine has come across in a very long time. This wine is reliant on good clean primary fruit consisting of white peach, grapefruit and melon with nice crisp acidity and a somewhat creamy mouth feel.

Domaine Felix Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2014-Burgundy France
Finding a great entry level burgundy is like finding a needle in a haystack but we have struck it lucky with this offering.
This wine is perfectly balanced with bright cranberry and raspberry fruit, ultra-fine tannin and some graphite minerality.
Pork belly, Duck Pancakes and so on …… this is a perfect partner but don’t forget this as a red with fish!

Kellybrook Pinot Noir 2015-Yarra Valley
At Vine there are not many wineries especially local one’s that we have not had the pleasure to critique.
“Kellybrook where have you been all my life?” exclaimed Alex whilst being comforted by an open fire in a white silk robe with a balloon glass full of this velvety number.
Established in 1970 with old vines for the Yarra, this wine has prettiness of seductive cherry and raspberry some subtle spice and ample tannin that all melds together that makes it almost impossible to resist another tipple!

Ca’Bianca Ante Barbera d’Asti 2013-Italy
This wine was a real surprise package as it’s meatiness defied my original impression of most Barbera from Asti in Northern Italy and was more like a complex Barbera of Alba also from the North but regarded more highly.
Dark, dense and generous in style displaying meaty dark currants some leathery notes and some herbal lift all in unison with gritty tannin.
A great partner to all meaty fare!
RRP $27.95

Twin Cellars Malbec 2014-Margaret River
A rival to our more highly sought after Argentinian (Mendoza) rivals especially at the unwooded primary end of the spectrum.
Malbec in this style is ever so quaffable can be on the fruit driven spectrum with lifted maraschino cherries, mulberry and raspberry on persistent juicy palate.

Vastly experienced Alex Sherrah began his journey in Tatachilla then travelled the world with stints in the Napa Valley,Austria, and Burgundy before returning as head winemaker at Coriole in 2012.
Alex is at the forefront of new winemaking philosophy reliant on attention to detail in the vineyard and letting the end result being all about the vineyard.
This wine is bursting with sweet red fruits, mint, anise and white pepper in a vibrantly lifted palate but engaged with chalky tannins.

Kaesler Avignon Grenache Mouvedre 2014-Barossa Valley
85 year old Grenache is hard to come by and often cannot be consumed regularly due to its price tag.
Kaesler has really over delivered with this wine in both the quality and bang for your buck stakes and would rival many of the Popes favourites from the famous southern Rhone Valley.
Opulent savoury plums, earth, chocolate and pepper with deftly handled caramelised soy oak rounds out the ever lingering palate.
Andrew’s favourite of the tasting and not to be missed!

Lake Breeze Arthur’s Reserve Cabernet Blend 2013-Langhorne Creek
A blend of 90% Cabernet,5% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec this wine is a real keeper for the cellar and is regarded as the best Bordeaux blend of a very competitive region.
The result is classic blackcurrant aromas with violets, mint and a delicious savoury edge.
The palate has great depth and silkiness whilst holding depth and intensity that never seems to end.
One of a very few 15-20 year plus wines or a decant for half a day before consuming.
