One of the things I really struggled with, when I was in a corporate leadership role, was developing the specialists of the team. They never seemed interested in being promoted into a leadership role and resisted ideas to explore growth outside of their immediate field of expertise. And I didn't really know what the alternative was for them - I always dreaded the conversation (I'm sure they did too). So when I spoke recently with Alistair Gordon about creating Master Experts I found there is indeed alternative pathways for specialists...and I got just a little bit excited. In this podcast conversation we talk about what is required to have an effective development discussion with technical specialists. Alistair shares that through building enterprise skills (which includes interpersonal and business related knowledge and skills) experts can increase their ability to influence outcomes across different contexts. He talks about emotional intelligence and shares that partnership and relationships are a critical piece of being a master expert. Helping them to understand the ‘why’ behind developing these skills is critical for their development and for the overall success of a team.
If, like me, you struggle with these conversations, this podcast gives some great insights.
