Subject: How are you continually developing your people Friend?

Developing yourself and others has evolved from that thing you 'did' outside of your role to now being part of how you operate day to day.

Continually developing your people

Hey Friend

Developing others used to be an infrequent, stand alone activity for the purpose of picking up new skills and techniques and hopefully resulting in an incremental lift in performance. It was done, usually in person, and usually over the course of one or two days, and, for the most part, that was enough for the year.

Today, however, faced with an impending skills gap, the rapid advancement of technology and a highly transient workforce, we need to consider more seriously our approach to professional development.

While one-day, in-person training still has it's place, we can incorporate development activities into every part of how we work. That's what the leader of the futures responsibility is, what your responsibility is Friend - to own it, role model it, make it happen in your team.

Continually developing your people doesn't require loads of extra time and effort (who has extra of that anyway), it might just mean tweaking the things you're already doing. Things like...

  1. When asked a question, answer with a question - get them thinking. Instead of giving the answer straight away.

  2. When holding a team meeting, rotate the host so everyone in a team gets a chance to lead the agenda and bring their own expertise to the room.

  3. When running a team building activity, be intentional about the learning outcomes - play a game like 2 SIDES IN 2 MINUTES to build the skills of communication and feedback.

INTRODUCING 2 SIDES IN 2 MINUTES

My colleague, Renée Giarrusso, and I have created a game to provide an interactive and fun way to boost communication and, at the same time, provide a dynamic platform to build adaptability and appreciation for 2 sides of a discussion, topic, or idea. We believe that being an effective and highly adaptable communicator is vital within the workplace, for both leaders and teams. When we communicate openly, understand and appreciate the difference of perspectives, we can create a collaborative and high performance culture.
