Hey Friend,
Empowering your people is a bit like teaching a child to tie their own shoelaces. They'll get it wrong over and over before they get it right. It can be messy and frustrating to watch, and you'll often feel tempted to step in and just do it for them. But do you really want to be tying their laces when they’re in their 20s? Maybe you don’t mind, but how do they feel about it?
The same applies in the workplace. We often have capable adults being 'tied up' by their leaders. How embarrassing, deflating, and uninspiring! It’s no wonder many teams experience high turnover rates.
If you're a leader who gets frustrated with the process of empowering others and defaults to "it’s just easier to do it myself," know that you're not alone. Many leaders face this struggle. But also know that it’s holding you back from your own success and progress.
Today’s leaders don’t have the time to micromanage their people’s development. Instead, they should focus on holding space and coaching their team to take ownership of their own growth. Once someone is empowered to own a task or responsibility, they will continue to own it—you won’t have to go back to square one. Your role is to hold that space and let them do the work.
If you’re finding it hard to let go and empower your team—whether it's helping them develop new skills or take ownership of their decisions—consider joining me for my upcoming Lead to Empower Program.
We’ll explore: Self-Initiation: Owning your direction, brand, and outcomes, while differentiating what’s within your control. Awareness: Identifying trends across industries, geographies, and organisations, and learning from them. Adaptability: Continuously growing both technical and interpersonal skills. Attitude: Understanding the importance of mindset, communication, and relationships, both individually and as part of the collective.
Over four weeks, you’ll participate in a weekly 90-minute session designed to help you build confidence in your strengths and teach others to do the same.
Play the long game and empower your people!
