Hey Friend
There are so many reasons why a dynamic leader should embrace curiosity and today I’m going to share my top five with you. Curiosity enables you to build capability and reduce dependency. Asking your team questions to get them thinking more broadly and finding their own solutions will build confidence, independence and autonomy. Curiosity encourages creativity. Expanded (or divergent) thinking, that comes with asking questions, helps to innovate, improve and continuously evolve. Curiosity is the counterweight of anxiety and fear. According to social psychologist, Paul Silvia, "if you're curious about something, it acts as a positive counterweight to anxiety and fear". While it won't completely wipe out the nerves you feel, it may be enough to distract you from the negativity and help you focus on the positive. Curiosity increases your intelligence. As Albert Einstein said “the mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size”. Curiosity builds trust and enables a space where feedback is sought and received. When we can give and receive feedback as part of our daily practice and team culture our ability to learn and grow amplifies.
For you, as a leader, curiosity must come from a genuine place of interest. If you want your people to feel like you care, then actually care.
Start with, "I want to hear your opinion". Then hold the silence long enough to actually hear and fully understand the other person’s point of view, thoughts, ideas and contributions.
It’s listening with the intent to learn and not simply to respond that will allow you to embrace true curiosity and a Dynamic Leader mindset.
Still curious? Get in touch.
Until then, stay awesome!
