Subject: Mr. Rogers Rules for Music Teaching

Mr. Rogers’ ideas can help music teachers

Several years ago, The Atlantic published an article called “Mister Rogers’ Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children.”

I absolutely loved this article and have revisited it often.

The simple idea was that adults tend to forget that children see and understand the world differently.

He had a “rulebook” for talking to children that his cast and crew became familiar with.

Here are just a few rules (source):

  1. “State the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.” Example: It is dangerous to play in the street.

  2. “Rephrase in a positive manner,” as in, It is good to play where it is safe.

  3. “Rephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.” As in, “Ask your parents where it is safe to play.”

When I first read this article in 2018… It immediately resonated with me.

I had invented and been using my own set of rules for teaching group lessons for about 10 years at that point.

I call them my “Six Principles of Group Success.”

It is the centerpiece of my group lesson training… it’s the core of what makes it all work.

I came up with the rules, as a result of the initial stresses that I felt teaching in the group format.

I then taught these rules to teachers and shared videos of my group teaching… and they were able to teach in the multi-level format, too!

It solved problems common to teaching music:

  1. How to manage your time well

  2. How to cut down on the amount of “explaining” you have to do to students

  3. How to increase a student’s retention of the “facts” of music

  4. How to guarantee that students practice with a high degree of accuracy at home

  5. How to get students to sight read new music on their own by their 2nd lesson

  6. How to get students to learn new songs without teacher hand holding by their 2nd lesson

  7. How to get students to play over the bar and from line to line without pausing by their 2nd lesson

  8. How to use language with young children

  9. How to stop “helicopter parenting” students

  10. How to build independent students that learn on their own

I go into great details on these concepts (and a lot more) in my Successful Group Lessons training.
