Do you ever reflect on how far you’ve come as a teacher?
Do you ever stop to take stock of the differences in your resources, in your methods, in the way that you motivate your students?
This has certainly been true for me… When I think back on how I used to teach rhythmic concepts in the early days of my teaching (eighth notes, dotted rhythms)... I feel sorry for my poor students who struggled with those concepts because I hadn’t yet “dialed in” how to teach rhythm.
To teach is to constantly be striving for improvement and growth!
The same is true for the work that I do with music studio owners.
I want to improve, to expand, to grow the resources that I have for teachers.
That is why I invested a significant amount of time and money improving the training for this special Holiday 2018 edition of Successful Group Lessons.
Over the past few months, we added a special new section to the training called “The Vault.”
We looked back at the HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of questions that have been asked by those who have taken the training.
We found that some questions have been asked over and over.
So, I added hours and hours of new video answering the following 34 questions:
LOGISTICS
- How do you handle price changes when switching from 45 minute private lessons vs 60 minute group lesson?
- How do you handle a group student that isn’t disruptive… but isn’t staying on task?
- How much time do you spend in group on “previous assignments” vs “new assignments”?
- What do you do if a student masters a song during the group lesson… should you send them home with that song?
- How do I handle older kids and younger kids in the same group? Do older kids feel awkward being with younger students?
- How do I manage the behavior of younger kids settling into the group environment?
- How do I manage the behavior of transfer students who are coming into established groups?
- How do I handle a transfer student who feels insecure and needy in the group?
MARKETING
- What general marketing advice would you give to a marketing newbie?
- How should I tell parents I’m converting from a travel studio to this new program?
- How do I raise rates AND introduce a group program at the same time?
- What do I do if people just don’t respond to my invitation to join the new group program?
- How do I market and highlight the new group lessons program without making private lessons sound substandard?
- Is it possible to market yourself as both a casual teacher for less committed students and a serious teacher for more advanced students?
- What do you do if families don’t understand all the implications of switching to a group program?
- When a new family contacts you, is it better to call them first or email them?
- What do you say when parents ask you what happens when their student “graduates” out of the group program?
EDUCATION
- How do you prepare students for exams and recitals in a group environment?
- How do you integrate a transfer student into the group?
- How do you handle transfer students who have gaps in their knowledge?
- How do you keep track of practicing in the group program?
- What do students need to practice at home?
- How do you teach lead sheets in the group?
- How do you track overall progress of a student in the group?
- What method books do you use in the group and which BOOKS do you use from the method?
- How many new pieces do you assign each week in the group program
- What do you say to parents and students about practice?
- How do you handle different personality types and ages in the group?
- How do I deal with needy kids in group?
- How do you handle siblings taking group lessons at the same time?
- How do you use technology in groups (such as an iPad)?
- Should you use headphones in group or no headphones?
- What do you do with students that are struggling to read notation or struggling with music lessons in general? Can they thrive in the group environment?
- Can you use Piano Safari or other rote-based methods at the beginning?
I have answered all of these questions for every past and future student of Successful Group Lessons using my experience and knowledge from the past 10 years.
Not only that, some of these videos contain answers from alumni of the training… their experiences and insights.
And… if you have questions beyond these?
Well, that’s why we are going to do a number of LIVE WEBINARS together.
No matter what… you will get every question that you have about group lessons answered!
And, you will create a dynamic, exciting program that parents want to stay in for years.
Keep an eye on your email… later this week or early next week I’m going to give you a live tour of the entire training.
So, many exciting things in store!
Registration for Successful Group Lessons opens this Friday, November 23rd.
Very best, Daniel
