There were pro’s and con’s to teaching in this way.
Let’s look at them briefly:
✅ Pro’s
Full-time pay with part-time hours
Eliminated scheduling headaches because groups were multi-level
Students were able to progress on their own because of multi-level format
Able to easily offer makeups since students could come to ANY other group
More time with students
Able to supervise beginners and send them home with all new songs learned
Beginner students doubled the number of songs they passed each week
Students enjoyed lessons more since their lessons felt easier
⛔ Con’s
The format highlighted my weaknesses as a teacher and forced me to improve
Teaching the group felt hard at first - I felt “spread thin”
Difficult to teach this format to an employee, as it was more of a “style” of teaching
Had to change the way I marketed my studio
Had to figure out a way to “convince” parents to accept the new format
As I look at those two lists, I can clearly see now that the reason I experienced all of the “Pro’s” were because I overcame all of the “Con’s.”
