Have you heard of the song “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey?
Haha, trick question… of course you do, because everyone knows that song.
It is on the verge of being the most popular song of all time… not just holiday song, the biggest pop song of all time (measured by sales and most plays).
When interviewed about the song, she said that she was very passionate about writing a Christmas song. She said she is a “very festive person and I love the holidays” (direct quote).
She and her husband wrote the basic melody and structure in 15 minutes and then continued to add lyrics, change things, improve things over the next few weeks. |

It made the Billboard top 10 for the first time in 2017… just over 23 years after its original release!
According to The Economist, Mariah Carey has earned over $60 million in royalties because of that song.
I love this story for several reasons:
- I loved this song when it first came out (and still do, if I’m being honest)… I remember watching the music video on MTV in middle school. It takes me right back!
- As a music studio business nerd, this story inspires me.
Think about it!
She made a single decision, a single investment of creative energy that paid her for years and years to come.
