Subject: Friend, when is the BEST time of the day to workout?
Friend,
I often get asked what is the best time of day to workout. It’s a good
question and I understand that people want to optimize their workouts but I
often laugh when I get that question.
I laugh because, inevitably, it comes from someone who has been very
inconsistent with their workouts over the past year or so. How consistent
are you with your workouts might be the better question.
And that question correlates directly with what time of day is the best.
Here’s how. Take person A who works out first thing in the morning
because they read somewhere that it’s the best way to start your day and
you’ll get the most beneift from your workouts if they are done first
thing in the morning. But, what person A fails to understand is that they
are not a “morning” person and after a few weeks starts to hit the
snooze button a few times. Next thing you know, they are missing workouts a
few times a week until they get to the point they are no longer workiing
out. Happens all too often.
Now let’s take person B who knows they aren’t really a morning person.
They know that although they might start out full speed and gung ho for
their morning workouts, eventually they will lose steam and motivation and
slowly but surely the workouts will start to become a chore and they will
eventually stop.
So person B is not going to let that happen. They know that they have time
at night after the kids are in bed. So they put together a plan for an 8:00
pm workout tiime. They start out doing two workouts a week for 45 minutes
each and after a few weeks of consistency, they bump it up to 3. They’re
feeling great and get to the point where they want to add in another
workout. So they decide to add in Sunday morning as their 4th workout.
Sunday morning works on the weekend because they don’t have work
and are able to workout at 8:00 am and be ready for the day at 9:30.
So I ask you, what is the bet time of day to workout? Whatever time works
for you! As you can see from the example above, some people are better at
night, some might be better in the morning and a combination of both might
be what works for you.
So don’t listen to the talking heads on TV or the lastest fitness
magazine article. It’s something only you will know.
