Subject: Friend, have I been starving myself and I didn't notice?

Hey Friend,

So, my email yesterday about eating a protein bar or nothing caused quite a stir on Facebook.

I posted my email from yesterday as a statement, "If weight loss is your goal and you have a choice to eat a protein bar or nothing, you should choose nothing".

There were many comments, mainly by people not agreeing of course.

Because so much of our society has been inundated and brainwashed with the advice that you have to eat all the time and that not eating is bad.

Even when the choice is a protein bar (which I pointed out that most of them are just as bad as candy bars) or eating nothing, many people still believe that the choice should be the candy bar (I mean protein bar)!

The one comment that really validated my point was that someone said, "we should be nourishing our bodies, not starving them".

  Really?

Is skipping a meal now considered starving?

C'mon!!!! Let's think about that for a second.

I think we can all agree that we use the term "starving" a little too loosely nowadays.

But see, that's part of the whole problem.

Supersize it, grande lattes, all you can eat buffets, finish your plate, etc.

That's the society we live in. More is better.

Truth be told, it's the opposite attitude one should have when trying to lose weight.

If we take a look at the average person in our society, would you say that we need to eat more food or less food?

I know that the answer is less food (and better quality food too).

Which brings up the other issue I have, and the original intent behind the email from yesterday, which is that the protein bar is absolute shi*.

Awful ingredients, processed, sugar alcohols, etc.

So why would eating that be the better choice for someone looking to lose weight?

  It's NOT.

And to come full circle and make my point, I would go as far as to say if someone is looking to lose weight and the choice is eating an apple or eating nothing, eating nothing would be a very good choice a lot of times.

But again, the mentality of so many people is that eating anything is always better than eating nothing?

  Why is that?

I think it mainly comes down to people not wanting to be uncomfortable.

Stepping out of your comfort zone (being too hot or cold, waking up early to exercise, etc.) is not something that a lot of people are good at.

And that's why many people are overweight, unhappy, unsuccessful, etc.

I'm certainly not saying that if you are uncomfortable that you will automatically be successful (but many successful people are really good at getting comfortable at being uncomfortable).

But I can tell you that you'll have a much better chance at it.

So what about you Friend, does skipping a meal here and there make you think that you'll be starving yourself and be uncomfortable?

Or do you see that as a way of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable here and there?

I view it as the latter and I feel I'm so much healthier (and leaner) because of it.

So, have I been starving myself for the last 10+ years by fasting and missing meals?

  Absolutely not.

It's been intentional and it's become a way of life for me.

  And guess what?

  I'm very comfortable with it.

P.S. Melissa Gonzalez got comfortable with being a little uncomfortable and look at what she had to say about it: “I was skeptical at first but as the weeks went by I became a believer. Losing 15 pounds in 8 weeks is great, but there is so much more. I feel really good, lots of energy and after my annual physical, I am the healthiest I’ve been in 50 years! Like so many others, I wish I started this sooner. This is my life now and I will continue with this program. So happy!”
