Does Thanksgiving Make You Fat?
Friend,
Well, here we are again. Thanksgiving 2019. Feels like only last year we (I) was saying the same thing! It's funny how time goes by so quickly, especially as you get older. I'm not sure if you feel the same way but it definitely feels like that to me.
I digress.
Being in the health/fitness industry, I've trained many clients over the last 20 years. And I always find it so interesting how many of my clients, or just people in general, stress over eating too much on Thanksgiving. And the other big holidays too. Whether it's Christmas/ Hanukkah, Easter/Passover, Thanksgiving, etc.
I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Eating too much on any given holiday will not make you fat. Yup, read that again. Eating too much on any given holiday will not make you fat.
But I'll tell you what does make you fat.....eating too much on all of the other days in between the big holidays.
You see, if you break it down, the big holidays amount to what, 4 or 5 days of the year? I challenge you to eat like an absolute pig on those days and see if you get FAT. You're probably thinking, "Of course I'm going to gain weight if I pig out on those days!" But there's something else you have to keep in mind.
How is your the other 350 days of the year? A-HA!!! And there it is! See, if you eat very clean and very healthy most days of the year, you'll be fine to go all out on the holidays. Which brings up another point. Chances are, if you're a healthy eater for most of the year, you're probably not going to be interested in "going all out" and stuffing your face on Thanksgiving. Now, will you eat a little more than usual? You could. Will you have a second serving of mashed potatoes? You could. Will you have that piece of Apple pie that you normally don't have? You could.
And will it matter to your waistline? Probably not.
When you wake up on Friday you might notice the scale moved north a pound or two. But come Saturday or Sunday, it will be right back to where it was on Wednesday. The body has a great way of auto-regulating itself. Assuming you've been pretty healthy with your eating plan up until that point.
So go ahead and splurge a little. You deserve it. It's not going to have any impact on your bottom line.
One last thing...to those of you who are saying, "But what if I haven't been a healthy eater for most of the year?" My answer to that is, "Don't start your healthy eating habits on Thursday!"
Enjoy yourself and start your weight loss plan on Friday!
